The swell stayed at a moderate roll but the early winds made conditions choppy for boating, but catches of flathead were good compensation.
Sunday’s barbecue seemed quiet with only 12 anglers weighing 32 species of fish but there was plenty of cheer as the club’s president celebrated his birthday.
Most fish seemed to only be pan-sized with a mix of reef species and flathead caught.
Malua Bay weighmaster Andrew Turner said all eyes were on pint-sized Robert Poile with his 3kg jewfish.
“This little small-fry is starting to outclass a lot of senior anglers,” Turner said.
Anthony and Jenelle McLennan look to be running away with the points total this year with consistent catches of fish on competition weekends and both claimed prizes in November.
“Anthony had a nice snapper of 1.8-kilogram and Janelle’s morwong was just over a kilo,” Turner said.
Connor Purdom was in the winners’ circle with a 450-gram flathead to claim the juniors’ prize.
Malua Bay’s next competition will be on the December 13 and 14.
It will also be the club’s Christmas part and Santa may make an appearance.
In other news at the club, members have been catching good-sized kingfish in close, off Durras, and wide, off Moruya.
The fish are coming onto the bite now and seem to be travelling in large schools.
Jigging while having live bait sitting five to 10 metres off the bottom can help anglers snag one.
“Hopefully the jigging motion lures the fish onto the livie then holds on and stops him hitting the bottom,” Turner said.
“These are certainly adrenaline pumping fish.”
There have been a few albacore in the blue water caught up to 10kg.
Yellowfin have been a bit scarce but long liners north and wide have been recording good numbers.
