Organisers - Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma Rotary Clubs and Moruya Jockey Club - met MCC chairman Cr Rob Pollock at Moruya Hospital recently to check on the Unit’s progress.
‘We’re extremely pleased with the new unit, although a little frustrated completion of the unit has stalled while contracts with the subcontractors are finalised,’ Cr Pollock said. ‘Nothing is ever as simple as we would like.
‘We’re very grateful to Member for Bega Andrew Constance, the NSW Government, Southern Area Health and everyone who has put into this.
‘If it wasn’t for the strong community push for the new unit by people and organisations like Rotary, we would not have this new unit being constructed today under the new Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Moruya.’
The need for a more spacious and modern Oncology to benefit both staff and patients was initiated by Ron and Tralee Snape a few years ago and resulted in the formation of Moruya Cancer Carers.
Cr Pollock said Moruya Cancer Carers is close its target of $150,000. ‘Christmas at the Races will help us meet our target and a bit more,’ he said.
He said while the new Oncology Unit is being built and equipped by the government, Moruya Cancer Carers will provide the ambience of the new unit and also with transfer of the unit.
‘Everyone was thrilled with the response to last year’s inaugural Christmas at the Races for Moruya Cancer Carers,’ said event spokesperson Vere Gray. ‘This year we hope to do even better.’
Bookings are still open for the scrumptious three-course Christmas lunch at $35 a head provided by local chef Michael Stokes, star of local ABC radio. Each organisation will have its own marquee.
‘If people want to do their own catering, they can book their own marquee with tables and chairs for $5 a head, or else there is the food normally available at the races,’ Mrs Gray said.
All money raised by Rotary will go to Moruya Cancer Carers as well as a percentage of the gate and bar, depending on their performance on the day. There will also be raffles and other fundraising activities.
Bookings for lunch – both the catered at $35 a head, and the self-catered marquees at $5 a head should be made with Geoff Fleming on 44717628 or geoffrey.fleming@bigpond.com.
