Brendan started work with us last week and no doubt spent a lot of time with Richard Goodridge and staff in his first week or so. I will inform readers more about Brendan after I have spoken to him in the near future.
I missed golf last Thursday for a bundle of reasons which I won't go into. Needless to say I missed a pretty flash day for golf. There was a light sea breeze early and the nor-easter kicked in mid-afternoon which it has done with regularity in November. The results in all grades reflect happy golfers enjoying the conditions, especially those in the morning field.
Michael Commins, veteran golfer and surfer, won A grade with 42 points well clear of Dave Hayward and Bob Knipler on 39 points. Ted Poczyhaljlo, an early golfer, won B grade with 41 points on a count back from Rod Shepherd, and Graham Small was third with 39 points. Similarly, Ian Vincent took out C grade with 40 points on a count back from James O'Sullivan. Peter Kape got third prize with 39 points. Other highlights from Thursday include the return from injury of Scott Ker and a hole in one to Bill Anderson on the 17th. Congratulations Bill.
On my travels to the hay fever capital of Australia on Friday for grand-parenting duties, I dropped in to Gungahlin Lakes, Yowani and RMC Duntroon to deliver, in Santa style, some prizes from the recent Narooma Mens Open. All courses stood out like oases in a very dry Limestone Plains. This year so far Canberra and region has had 460mm of rain whereas Narooma has had more than 900mm.
Saturday’s golf results show Bob Knipler winning A grade with 40 points just ahead of Laurie Holmes and Michael Commins. All three are very consistent and Bob is in the middle of a purple patch, as they say in the classics. Bill Swan won B grade from the very hard-working retired engineer Peter James with Tony Hunt third. Derek Moritz scored in C grade, like he did for Manly in so many games. From memory he was a winger and a good one. Ron Crighton and Bob Steel shared the minor prizes.
Sunday was a hot one in Canberra - a very hot one: 24deg at 1030, 32deg at 1100 and 39 at 3pm. The winds gusted to just on 55km/h from the west norwest in the afternoon. No seabreeze, no escape and just keep indoors or in the shade with a wet bandana over your head to stay cool. I reckon I lost over a kilogram during the day according to my daughter's scales.
As I headed back to the coast for a Board meeting I reflected what a good idea it was all those years ago to invest in property in the Eurobodalla shire. Even better, what a great plan it was to retire to the coast and spend the last decades of one's life golfing, surfing, fishing, diving and enjoying the fine food available. The icing on the cake is the climate. Bye-bye Canberra until next time.
Next weekend it is Narooma Ladies Open. I hope you all play well and I look forward to perusing the results next weekend.
That is all for the moment. Catch you all next time.
Cheers, good health and great golfing. Bill Baker
