As we headed north it appeared to be fining up after a very wet week or more in the Eurobodalla shire. The golf course was soaking it up and you could nearly hear the grass grow walking about the fairways.
There was no golf played last Thursday because of the persistent rain.
A friend at Moruya Heads was checking the surf last week when what he thought were surfers turned out to be cattle floating out the river mouth. The Deua and Tuross rivers were both flooding in places and even Potato Point was cut off briefly.
The major golf event for the wet week just gone was last Saturday.
In A grade Steve Marsden won on a count back with 38 points. Gavin Lang was pipped with Brian Mills among the winners with 36 points. "Marso" recently played a top round with a score less than his age. I believe that was a score in the low 70's.
B grade was Jim O'Sullivans with 41 points just ahead of Peter Kearney and Vince Harper. Why do some of his friends call him "speedy"? C grade was won Sid Dean with 42 points. Brian Murray and Edgar Kastowsky fought out second and third places.
Late on Sunday I watched the final of the PGA and reflected, after Greg Chalmers won in record play off, that my partner in last weeks 2 man Ambrose, Rod Streater a fellow left hander, played a similar game. We were paired with Paul Lefen and Michael Wutke-Hayes, with whom we had a lot of fun. Michael is a funny man and kept us entertained.
There were a couple of quotes on the menu here at the Anchorage last night that I would like to share with you. Ernest Hemingway wrote that "Wine is the most civilised thing in the world", John Maynard Keynes reckoned "My only regret in life is that I did not drink more champagne" and finally on this tangent Martin Luther said, apparently, "Beer is made by men, wine by God".
That is it from me for another week as I look forward to golf on Thursday.
The festive season is closing in on us, one more board meeting, a bit of shopping, stock the larder and hope for good weather for golfing and surfing. Best of luck to my friend and neighbour Mark, who is going in for knee reconstruction in the near future.
Catch you next week, stay healthy and best wishes to all for the rest of 2014! Hasn't it gone quickly?
Regards, Bill Baker
