Each cigarette contains enough toxins to pollute 7 litres of water per butt, so with several hundred butts in one small location, the damage starts to really add up.
Council will be conducting a community clean-up of Narooma Plaza car-park on January 15.
“This is to help prevent cigarette and other litter going into storm water drains and entering our beautiful waterways,” Gilly said.
Community members can help with the clean-up which starts at 10.30am. For more information, you can contact the sustainability officer on 4474 1000.
Narooma Plaza also recently installed additional wall-mounted ashtrays to assist smokers in disposing of their cigarette waste appropriately as part of an EPA grant to council and centre management.
A recent clean up at Moruya IGA yielded 4 litres of cigarette butts collected in an hour with five volunteers.
“Together everyone’s thoughtful actions can make a positive difference. Smokers who use ashtrays are truly litter prevention legends and we thank them.”
