While she was at boarding school, Remi continued her training with the ACT Brumbies youth rugby union representative team, a team she has been a member of for almost three years. Remi travels twice a week to Canberra from Narooma.
The Brumbies girls’ team attended the Youth Nationals Seven's Rugby competition at Narrabeen last weekend. Seven's rugby is a quick, athletic style of rugby, which is highly tactical. Teams play full contact with seven minutes per half (10 mins in the finals) and seven players per team. There is a big focus on the development of the sport it is scheduled as an Olympic sport in Rio in 2016.
The top 10 teams from all over Australia were vying for a podium finish. The competition was fierce and the weather was hot (37 degrees on Sunday). A lot of the teams boasted Youth Olympic players and the games were a great display of talent, skill, speed, amazing ball skills and fantastic and hard hitting defence.
The Brumbies played four games on day one and racked up wins against SA, NT and NSW White. They went down the QLD Reds in their third game, but only by one try, showing real determination. This put the Brumbies in the top four going into finals day - a result which was the best in the Brumbies history.
On day two all the girls were feeling pretty battered and bruised. Their first game was the semi-final against NSW Blue. They were defeated convincingly by the Blues, who went on to win the National title, defeating QLD Reds. The girls bounced back for their final game of the series - a play off for third and fourth. They ran on the field and didn't give NSW White a chance. They stuck to the game plan and ran out winners 17-0, taking third in the Nationals.
Remi scored two tries in the final game and was also presented with the "Spirit of the Brumbies" award as voted by her fellow teammates. The Brumbies third placing was a massive achievement for the Brumbies collectively, but also each individual player - many of the girls travelled 1600kms a week to attend training.
