Lives: Tathra
1. What is the most important message you have received from the community during this election campaign?
The Liberals want to privatise services (including many health services) and our electricity network, but we don’t want them sold: we will be worse off if the electricity poles and wires are sold off to some foreign investment bank. $1.7 billion in electricity profits currently used each year to fund our nurses, paramedics and teachers will be lost. Unemployment here is double the State average and good jobs for local youth just don’t exist.
2. How has your focus changed since the start of the election campaign?
It’s become clear voters want a representative who understands their everyday issues and doesn’t make rash promises that are not kept. My focus on the local economy was always strong but I’ve learned that people believe, rightly, that this area has been neglected at the expense of Sydney and other regions. Proper commitment to this community and leadership is needed.
3. How will you/your party improve the Eurobodalla’s economy?
The economy is in crisis: we see it in the empty shops and offices, 14.5 per cent unemployment in the Bay and double-digit elsewhere in the area. I have developed a positive five-year plan to create sustainable economic growth using innovative means, working with councils, business, the tourism and all industry sectors, and community groups. It’s a three phase plan to do what other regions have done brilliantly to grow such as the Margaret River area and others. Readers can see my detailed plan at www.leanneatkinson.org.au/leannes_plan.
4. Why should residents vote for you?
I know and love this beautiful region and have raised a family here. I’m not part of one of those factions that all major parties have that insist you do as you’re told. I’m running to take a strong local message to Sydney. I am someone who will listen to people and argue their issues fiercely. I have developed a strong plan to grow our economy and I will continue to work for that either in or out of Parliament.
5. Is there anything else you would like to add?
I know, from talking to thousands of people over the past nine months, that this region is being neglected by Government and needs a kick-start. I know people are worried about the future for themselves and their kids and grandkids, and that the household budget is becoming more and more stretched. I will stand up for this community, fighting against the sell-off of public assets, but also with a plan to bring new jobs to this region.
