The Narooma 1 team played their first game against a strong Bega outfit that ran too strong and straight for the Narooma defence. Max, Milo and Joey never stopped trying in defence with Jyarah, Max and Mystery scoring a try each. Final score Bega Blue 34 defeated Narooma 1 14. The second game was against Moruya and saw an improved effort with Hunter and Travis tackling well. The game was an exciting end to end tussle, with Narooma gaining possession and the score being 14-10. Mystery sprinted away on another long distance attacking run only to have the Moruya cover defence squeeze her over the line. Moruya scored in the next set with Moruya winning 20-10. Try scorers were Hunter and Mystery. Well done Narooma 1, Travis and Joey made some long runs, Bradley, Isla and Tom never stopped trying with all the players developing nicely. Watching the twins work together in defence was also very pleasing.
The Narooma 2 team played their first game against Cooma 2 team. The Cooma team was a large impressive looking outfit. Riley, Sam, Luke and Hunter held the middle and Rueban injected well in defence from out wide. Narooma 2 benefitted from their defence and ran in five unanswered tries to Daniel, Rueban, Riley, Hunter and Sam, winning 26-0. Good performance by all. Narooma 2’s second game was against Eden and had a shocking start making an error off the kick and Eden strolled over for a try in the next set. Narooma regrouped and put on the next four tries to Daniel, Riley (2) and Sam. Narooma 2 won 22-6.
Narooma 2 qualified for the semi-finals and was matched against the Cooma 1 team. Narooma managed to get off to a good start with Riley diving over the line. Further tries went to Daniel, Sam and Mystery. The defensive effort was fantastic with the big Cooma boys not too keen to run the ball. Max worked tirelessly in defence and tackled everything and did stop scrambling to make that extra tackle. Cooma crossed for a try with the final score being 22-6.
In the grand final Narooma played the Pambula-Merimbula Bulldogs. The Narooma team put together their best defensive effort, which would make their major sponsor Narooma Floor Sanding proud, they constantly repelled the Bulldogs onslaught on their line. The desperation saw numerous penalties given away but the Devils would not give up. At half time the Devils were up 10-6 with tries to Rueban and Sam. In the second half Sam added another try for Narooma to win 16-6 final score. The standard of football for an U8 game was exciting and compelling to watch. Special mention to Luke and Sonny who went throughout the day with no errors in the ruck distributing the ball well. The win is the first achievement for the team and it would not have been possible without the help and the support of the many parents and team members. The coaching staff is proud for the team. Training Friday, April 17 with a game against Moruya at home on the Saturday, April 18. Congratulations U8 Devils, first title with many more to come.
