Last Monday a call was made to Australian Seabird Rescue about a pelican at Tuross Head boat ramp with a broken lower beak.
On Tuesday morning the injured pelican was caught by a former ASR member, Peter West.
"It was obvious that the pelican could not be saved,” he said. “I took it to Moruya Vet where it was euthanized immediately.
"I estimate the bird had been in this state for about a week, in terrible pain and unable to feed itself and although it had been seen by quite a few people, no one had reported it to ASR.”
This even though there is an ASR sign at Tuross boat ramp.
"It is quite difficult to break this particular bone in a pelican’s beak and in my opinion it must have been a boat or jet ski strike,” Peter said.
“These type of injuries are always found after holiday weekends.”
Pelicans move quite slowly and are very easy to avoid with a boat or Jetski.
