THE greens were a sea of colour for the three days of competition as teams of bowlers from all around NSW, the ACT and Victoria played six rounds of pairs to try and win the big money on offer.  The final place getters were not finalised until the last round was completed which made the afternoon quite exciting with the likely outcome continually changing.  The winners were Chris Pollock from Moruya and Eric Johannes (skip) from Malua Bay who won all six of their matches and had an overall winning margin of 80 shots, second were Wayne Breust from Dalmeny and Narooma's John Breust (skip) who won five matches and drew one with a 55 shot margin.  Barry Daley from Yallourn and Kel Brandhoj (skip) from Lakes Entrance finished third with five wins and a draw and a 50 shot margin followed by Moruya's Don Cooper and Ray Emerson (skip) from Malua Bay on five wins and a 50 shot margin.  Fifth place went to Graham Piper from Moruya and Rick Malley (skip) from Windang with five wins and an 18 shot margin.  The tournament was a huge success with only one team going into the final round undefeated, showing the closeness of the competition.  Well done to all the teams who helped make the tournament so competitive, we look forward to seeing you back next year.

A tournament of this size could not be held without the generous sponsorship of the Narooma Sporting and Services Club Group and their sponsorship is much appreciated.  The assistance of John, Merrie, Sue, Don and Neville who did all the work in the background helped to make the tournament run smoothly.  Thanks to the umpires for their diligent service, the hard working ladies from the Narooma Women's Bowling Club for providing afternoon sustenance for the players.  Thanks again to the Women's Bowling Club and also to Ken Fitzpatrick, Tony, Peter and Dawn who provided the succulent Rapley Midtown Quality Meat's hamburgers and steak sandwiches and salads to feed the grateful bowlers.  Thank you to the NSSC office and bar staff who catered for all the needs of the bowlers.  In particular a big thank you to Rob and the able Green's staff for producing the greens in such great order.

Social bowls winners circle

We had bowls on Thursday to make up for Wednesday being taken up by the Classic Pairs.  First prize went to the in-form team of Don Williams, Kevin Goodridge and Barry Lymbery (skip) raced out to a good lead early only to be pegged back to lead 11 to eight after 10 ends and then put in another burst to take their match 19 to 14 against Billy Wilton, Mo Hinds and Michael Knight (skip).  Second place went to John Muir, Larry Hardingham and Peter McKay (skip) who hit the ground running to lead all the way against Allan Chisolm, Tony Fryer and Gerry Simmons (skip).

On Saturday there were five rinks of pairs with Tony Gors and John Lonergan (skip) playing some top bowls to come from being down 10 to 12 after 10 ends to power home for a 31 to 15 win over Tony Palmer and Peter McKay (skip).  Second place went to Garry Evans and Paul Read (skip) who hit form early to lead all the way for a 30 to 13 win over Wazza and Carl Lee (skip).

Narooma women’s bowls

OVER two months since my last report and I would like to say a huge 'thank you' to Dawn for stepping up to bring you our bowls news while I recovered.  Also, a speedy recovery to others who followed suit with injuries.

Ladies usual social bowls was transferred to Thursday, May 14 last week as the Men's Classic Pairs Tournament was in progress on Tuesday.  Twelve bowlers participated in two games of triples while four others enjoyed pairs on the neighbouring rink.  Heather McGourty and Kerry Ferguson (skip) shared the lucky rink prize with Pam Grant and Margaret Naylor (skip) following their 17 all draw, decided on the last end.

Bev Kellerman won the raffle, a lovely meat tray.

Happy Birthday wishes to Deb Cargill for the 9th, Gail Riley for last Tuesday and Leila Gosper last Thursday – hope each of you had a lovely day.

The next event to keep watch out for is the Minor Singles as the entry sheet will soon be on the notice board, first round on June 11.

Club Dalmeny bowls

ANOTHER fine Autumn Monday with the usual unpredictable winds gusting around saw games organised by Ken Adams and Keith and Leigh collecting the money and surprize, surprize young Dudley only on the raffle this week with his big return next week. The “lucky rinks system” decided the winners as that seasoned player Leo Winter with regulars Maurie Ferguson and Neville the Butt from runners-up Ace Elphick, Clive K-vee and Jim or is it Harold.  The resting toucher went off loudly to Marty Turner looking fitter and the $83 jackpot didn’t go off. Ken enjoyed himself picking up the wrong bias offenders and it’s just as well Leo and Jim were in the prize money so they could contribute. Just before the raffle, my cobber Peter Drake grabbed the mike and welcomed back Bryan Scott from his round world trip and reckoned he might “shout the bar” as he only spent a total of $50 while away but many were sceptical of this news and Bryan said ort. Ken showed his bi-partisanship and shared the raffle prizes on both sides of the bridge.

Clouds and swirling cold winds on Thursday saw the money collectors Keith and Bob and our one and only Neddie organising a full green of 42 players with Gary Lavis on the raffles. Gabby Cheel was welcomed back by everyone little knowing what her long lay-off had done to her form. There was a delay in the game start due to $3 being left in the pocket of Pommie Pete and we all had to wait until the books were balanced – yes I’ve heard the stories of how long it takes for him to get to the bottom of his pockets. Although Norma couldn’t play, she sent her usual ½-time bickies along courtesy of Redhead Ralph, who forgot her name when passing them around – bad form RR, but we all knew Norma was the good fairy. The game decider was “shots up” and the big winners with 27 were Bryan Scott, Ken Thomson and Keith Bowater and runners up with 23 were, wait for it, Gabby Cheel and Cheryl and Richard Goodridge. From what the goose heard we were lucky that the fire brigade was not called as Gabby was on fire (with the help of her partners) also that she wasn’t playing on the green nominated for the weekend district finals – she was stoked and who wouldn’t be after such a long lay-off. Norm Buden claimed the resting toucher and no-one claimed the Jackpot of $42. Our visitor and women named Maureen fared well in the raffle prizes although one of them was heard to whine about the lack of wine in the men’s first raffle since taking over from the women. Two small meat trays wasn’t good enough.

The goose enjoyed hugs and kisses (not just a peck) from two of the women present, I already mentioned and an eu-beaut-nice lady that accompanied Dudley and was the reason, he said, why he didn’t play today but promised he’d be back on Monday. We look forward to it.

Our perfect weather over the weekend saw Dalmeny host the No. 7 pennant district finals and our unbeaten No. 5 pennant team playing in the district finals at Bodalla. Sadly their unbeaten form did not continue on the Saturday going down to Cooma 1/2 and 12 shots on a very fast 19-second green. They returned to form on Sunday with a 3/0-16 shot win against Tura Beach and 2/1-5 shot win against Currarong which unfortunately was not good enough and finished 2nd overall in the district. Although a state selector was present and was heard to say that greens at 13-16 seconds is fast but at 19-seconds, it’s ridiculous, the result remains. Club Dalmeny is, as you should be, proud of your achievement and that you gave it your best. Done good, played strong, what more could your fellow bowlers ask for?

ON a lovely sunny day, four rinks of women enjoyed a game of bowls.  Winners were lead Maureen Nankervis, second Margaret Carpenter and skip Lyn Dunbar.  Runners-up were visitor Lorna Winter and Lois McGregor.  Eileen Lavis was closest to the spider and Jan Jones scored a resting toucher.  Congratulations to all bowlers.  Barbara Wort and Margaret Laker were the lucky raffle winners.  We wished Dulcie Boyd a happy birthday.  Cheerios go to our friend Val; you are in our thoughts.  Coming events include the Major Singles Championship for which the entries closed yesterday.  Congratulations to everyone involved in the Dalmeny Women’s Carnival, a very successful event by any standard.  Good bowling at the friendly club.  LGO
