GREETINGS from Mermaid Beach, Qld, where we are visiting extended family once again and where I hope to get a few games of golf plus a bundle of waves. My son reported last night the water is around 23 degrees and a week of mixed weather and winds is expected.

Before we left the south coast, where it had been warm and sunny most of the week, I was one of many on the course on Thursday for the Stableford competition.
Thursday Stableford Competition
After a cool start, around 8 degrees, and a frost recorded at Whittaker's Creek, it turned in to a lovely autumn day with a maximum around 20 with a light south-westerly breeze keeping us honest.
Scott Ker won A grade with 38 points well clear of the John Fails and Tony Cobcroft on 35 points. In B grade the count backs continued with Bob Piper winning just ahead of Rod Holman and Noel Fisher. C grade saw Robert Brown took the honours with 40 points and the next best were Stephen Paul and Bob Upton with 37 points. Well played gentlemen.
As we left Canberra heading to Coonabarabran on Saturday I was already missing golf but the weather was fine and warm and the NSW countryside looked lush and green just a week or two from winter.
Saturdays Par Event
There are some very fine scores in for the challenging par event held in sunny skies on Saturday. Geoff Lanham was too good in A grade and won with a plus 6, just one better than Jason Andrew and Derek Taylor.
In B grade, the consistent Bob Piper had a plus 4 to beat Russell Naumann on a count back, closely followed by Noel Davis. A couple of you boys are showing great consistency this week and will have two vouchers to collect. Ken O'Mahoney took out C grade with a plus 4 just ahead of Gary Leahy and the fast finishing "Uncle Jubes", aka, Lyle Healey. I call Lyle same because he occasionally leaves a bundle of lollies on a gum leaf near the cup on a hole for us to share. What a nice man and the name originated with my mother being called "Auntie Jubes" years ago after her habit of arriving in Tumut with us kids for holidays with bags of Marella Jubes for the in laws to enjoy.
In the ladies division, Janice Eardley took the laurels with minus 2. Once more well done to all the winners.
Come Sunday we were off to Moree and the artesian waters which range up to 40 degrees. My old eczematic skin had to settle for the cold pools and so be it. Brrr.
As I close this week, looking out at Broadbeach, there is a nasty looking weather pattern on the horizon and I suspect some rain is about today.
I will catch you all next week from the same spot although I hope to have more to say than I did this week.
Regards and good health, Bill Baker
