WINTER provided us with a fine week of weather for golf and activities outdoors as we head into July. Temperatures have ranged from minimums close to 5 and maximums in the high teens. Rainfall for June is just below average at 475mms which augurs well for growth when spring has sprung in a couple of months. Have you noticed the days are already a couple of minutes longer?

New bridge over Little Lake
The really big news, after eight months in a construction hiatus, is that work is due to start on our new BOLL as I write on Monday. Beauty, bottler, bloody good at long last, et cetera.
Sad news
Two long standing members of the Narooma golf club passed away in the week just gone. They were Brain Freeth, 1937-2015, and Geoff Marriott, 1928-2015. I didn't know Brian. One person who knew Brian well is Joe Ryan and Joe informs me that Brian arrived in Australia with his family in 1973 and reputedly stated that it "was the best move I ever made". He was a staunch West Bromwich Albion football fan and loved his golf and family.
Geoff Marriott, whose service many of us attended on Thursday afternoon, was a long term member of the club, treasurer for many years and also a key contributor to the match committee. He was great with numbers and rarely, if ever, did a golfer get away with submitting an incorrect card if Geoff was around. I will be writing an obituary about Geoff in the Narooma Golf Club winter newsletter which will be out in a week or two. He was a tall and true gentleman with a mellifluous voice, like a baritone, although I never heard him sing.

Thursday's Stableford Competition
It was a fine and sunny day after a cool and cloudy start but the chill from the south sou'wester was a factor, especially for early markers. The new irons were feeling good and all was in readiness for a top day on the course.
There were a lot of good scores in and the winner of A grade with 40 points was the Cobargo hobby farmer, Graham Kerr, one shot ahead of our resident starter on most golf days, Allan Mulhall, who was one better than Paul Stokes. Anton Galloway danced into first place in B grade with some great putting. He rides his putts on occasions as though he is dancing or about to fall over. 40 points speaks for itself and Anton was two points clear of Sidney Dean. In C grade John Casswell continued with his purple patch and won on a count back from Brian Murray.
Saturday's Stableford Competition
There were a few frosts recorded on the coast but it was 5 degrees when I ventured into town at 0830 and clear skies suggested another top day for golf. Speaking about frosts reminds me of when I played golf in Canberra in winter. On many mornings walking down the first fairway at Duntroon your shoes would pick up ice and you would be two inches taller by the time you got to the green where you would belt the ice off your shoes before putting. I don't miss it at all!
Once again there were some fine scores registered and in A grade the winner with 40 points was Mitch Jeffery just ahead of Bodgie Lee on a creditable 39 points. So too in B grade where Ron Gordon had 39 to win by one shot from Terry O'Callaghan. Terry nearly got a hole in one at the 17th when his ball finished 4 inches wide.
Victor Zarb won C Grade from the fast finishing Lionel Field and Kevin Cullen.
It is nearly time for me to head off to our monthly board meeting, however, before I do I would like to congratulate the Matilda's, our Women's Soccer team that have played great football in Canada over the past month. They were beaten by the mighty Japanese in the quarter finals. I found the games exciting and played in fine spirit, unlike a lot of men's games we see on television. My son's partner, Megan Kehoe, was part of the team assisting with physio and masseur skills and last I heard on Sunday was that the team were enjoying a celebratory drink or two in Edmonton. The girls were great ambassadors and congratulations to all of the squad. Well played.
