IT was an historic week for Narooma Golf Club on a number of fronts. Firstly, work began on our new bridge over Little Lake (BOLL). Secondly, a significant board meeting addressed our future with input from our auditors as a prelude to decisions that were focused on the clubs future after a challenging year, to say the least. I recommend members read the annual report and appreciate all that we have achieved as a club in difficult times in 2014-2015.

Thirdly, we had another storm on Thursday afternoon that not only curtailed golf for many afternoon players, but also tested our dear and complex roof. The staff were busy with buckets and the kitchen was temporarily closed. Hopefully our insurance can come to the rescue and assist in resolution of this issue.
Thursday's Stableford Competition
At 0830 is was a cool 4 degrees but by 1030 it was around 13 and looking north there were showers about. East of Montague Island it was dark and with a light nor-wester I thought that it ought go around us, out to sea or worry us later. Well it was sooner than later and by 2pm it was jet black over Mt Dromedary and there were rumblings as the wind dropped. My group were at Hogan’s hole and we decided "let's get out of here". I headed for the foyer and stayed put while the hail, snow and ice pelted down. Where was I? Jindabyne in a snow storm? There were snow / ice / hail drifts rushing past the front door. Weird weather. Then the roof started leaking and buckets were in demand. The wind had earlier freshened from the southeast and then the sou'wester did the damage. The temperature had obviously dropped to zero and Mother Nature took over. Four seasons in one day.
That was it for golf for me and I returned my soggy card to a committee person as someone, I think Graham Mumme approached and asked me, "Bill you are a director, can you organise the drinks please?" My damp reply was along the lines "the bar is open".
The trip home was a bit spooky in that I drove from Lawler’s Creek all the way to Bodalla, behind an ambulance, with ice and or hail covering the highway. One car spun out but my new tyres and my leader, the ambulance, stood me in good stead. A blackout at home and no drama otherwise. Stoke the fire and change out of the wet golf gear were priorities. My wife arrived an hour later and knew nothing of the weather drama events of the past three hours as she'd been shopping in "The Bay".
The lucky morning field players took the prizes and in A grade Nigel Roberts won with 37 points and Chris Goldsmith took out B grade on a count back from Gordon Roberts with 36 points. In C grade Allan Chisholm had 38 points, two better than Gilbert Mott.
Thursday was also a full moon and did you notice the bright stars in the north-western sky after sunset this week? Well, thanks to fellow director and well known taxi driver, Peter Kearney, I kept an eye on same all week. Peter mentioned during a break in our board meeting about two planets, including Jupiter, being as close as they will be for quite a while. In fact, it was Venus and Jupiter and they were increasingly close as the week progressed. Venus is the brighter of the two planets and they were setting around 9pm.
Saturday's Stableford Competition
A bit of high cloud and a mild 12 degrees at 1130 had us all in a positive mood going to the first tee, however, my friend Les Campbell had to pull out with a bad back. His sons, Joel from Melbourne and Joshua from Canberra were in town, to join me. Little did I know at the time that they and their sister Courtney and other brother Aaron, were here to celebrate Les's 60th birthday. Happy birthday on Tuesday Les and welcome to the next level.
We finished just after sunset at 5pm and I had had a shocker and Joshua scored an NCR so it was left to Joel to make a name for himself and he did so in fine form. The results in A grade showed he was runner up to Alan Butterworth who had a marvellous net 66 to win the monthly medal. In B grade Vince Harper took the laurels with a net 71, one better than Russell Naumann, whereas in C grade Peter Elliott won with a net 68. In the ladies, Mandy Hall scored with a net 78. Well done all of you in the winners lounge. Alan Butterworth also scored an eagle on the par four second hole. Excellent Alan!
In summary, the weather was the winner this week, what with a full moon, beautiful sunrises and sunsets and then Venus and Jupiter to finish us off. By the way the next full moon will be a blue moon as it is also in the month of July. Two in one month folks.
My well-travelled wife, Janice, took some photos of the work at BOLL on Friday at lunchtime as we drove to Cobargo for a change of scenery. They ought give a picture of the progress and major plant evident including two barges and a dozen new piers. Keep up the good work please.
Enough for now as the grand children are here and it is busy times here at PP.
Catch you next week out and about but hopefully on the fairway and not under trees, on roots, in bunkers as I was this week.
Cheers and regards, Bill Baker
