NATIONAL Parks managers are pleased with the progress of last week’s hazard reduction burning south of Narooma.
Area manager and incident controller Preston Cope said the fire behaviour was “text book” with flame heights limited to half a metre to one metre and with a 80 per cent reduction in fuel loads in the areas burned by fire.
The larger hazard reduction at Kangaroo Ridge between Bermagui and Cobargo was now considered to be out with 320 hectares burned.
The smaller hazard reduction on the south-western side of a Wallaga Lake was still burning in patches but had no reached the shores of the lake and could not go further, with 230 hectares burned.
There were no more hazard reduction burns planned by National Parks in the immediate future in the Narooma area, but Mr Cope said there was still a backlog of burns from the last few years and hence the urgency to get as much done as possible prior to the summer.
