National Parks field officer Boyd Hastings has perhaps done more than anyone else to bring the island back toward its former glory.
National Parks copped a lot of flak for the burning of the penguins incident and some have even suggested the goats should have been left on the island.
But the Seabird Habitat Restoration Project has been a great success due to the dedication of parks workers such as Boyd.
The project now needs to be reinvigorated to make sure that this good work continues and that the seabirds are given a chance to breed.
It is a shame that state and federal governments are seemingly cutting back National Parks and other environmental budgets and more often than not only offering short-term contracts.
Workers such as Boyd have gained insight from a long uninterrupted career on the island and we need more dedicated workers like him looking after our natural environment.
It was also great this week to see Corunna and Tilba lakes opening to the sea and with any luck prawn larvae should be entering these lakes right now and might even be ready to harvest come this Christmas.
The bluefin tuna run is now also well underway and thankfully in a victory for common sense, the bag limit is now one fish per person – why anyone would want to keep more than one of these monster fish remains a mystery to me!
