ON Sunday the inaugural Terry Gibbons Trophy was played at Narooma Golf Club. Terry was a well-respected, much loved member of the club who was on the board and worked tirelessly for the club in many ways.
There were about 65 players hitting off in the Medley Stableford competition. Terry's friends and family travelled from Adelaide and Queensland, Victoria and all places in between.
After the presentation, a memorial for Terry was held on the third hole. This was Terry's favourite hole as he had achieved two Hole In One shots there.
The Terry Gibbons Trophy was won by Terry's brother-in -law Pat McCormack with 37 points on a count back with Peter Ward runner-up also with 37 points. The Lady winner was Jan Shevlin with 35 points and the runner up Kerryn Nelson with 34 points.
Loraine Gibbons thanked the club for supporting the day and everybody who played or came along to make it a wonderful memorial for Terry.
As one of those who loved Terry, I can say he would have been so happy with whole day.
Golf Club news
WE have all heard the saying many times "that a week is long time in politics". Well what about the big chill and wet week that we have enjoyed, or not, over the past week or 10 days. As I write it is a beautiful Sunday afternoon and there are whales off Piccaninny Headland enjoying aquatic heaven, a mere 100 metres away. It seems they are undecided whether to head north or south, but my guess would be that they will head north for warmer waters shortly.
As you can see from the results column, there was not much golf on Wednesday or Thursday. Too wet man. My rain gauge suggested we had just under 80mms up until early Friday. It was a wonder we played on Saturday, a fact that I will get to shortly, because of seepage and run off continuing off the ridge lines and hill tops of Narooma and region.
The new BOLL (Bridge over Little Lake) at the 8th hole, opened on July 15.
Yippee, yahoo and finally we have the new bridge up and opened. On Wednesday morning, with limited fanfare, the new bridge was operational and the first golfers to use same were the ladies of Narooma who enjoyed a brisk winter's morning for a hit out. No men were playing, however, there were several in attendance for the official opening by president, Geoff Lanham. The mayor, Lindsay Brown was there too and we were all smiles as the green ribbons were cut and the silver balloons were held aloft. Dominic Connaughton and staff took the inaugural trip across the new bridge and I quickly scribbled my initials and the date on a large piece of timber, I believe it is marine hardwood turpentine. It ought outlast all of us I am reliably informed.
A special thanks to the builders, engineers, our technical committee and the staff at NGC, especially our general manager. I am sure you will all sleep much better and "live happily ever after", as they say in the classics.
Meetings, bloody meetings!
Have you ever seen the John Cleese movie, Meetings, Bloody Meetings? I used to show it to TAFE and University students and it is very funny indeed, unlike most meetings of the formal kind. However, there are impromptu, accidental and even street and corridor meetings that are important to all of us in life, at home or at work, or even at golf. So my point is I had a series of meetings on Thursday at Narooma with our staff, our GM and our fairly new course superintendent, Brendan Warby. They all went to plan and I will write more about Brendan next week. Thanks for your time everyone, I appreciate it greatly.
The weather!
During the past week the temperatures have ranged from near zero to around 16 on the warmer days. The chilly bits were associated with the cold westerlies and south-westerlies off the mountain ranges up Kosciuszko way. There were a few fishing on the beaches but fewer surfing over a period that I would say is the coldest I have experienced in the Eurobodalla.
Another astronomical event this week was associated with old Pluto, which we have been chasing for a few years.
Saturday's Stableford competition
Carts were allowed and so there was a reasonable field of golfers out and about on Saturday. I found the conditions tough. It was wet underfoot, there was no run, a gusty wind from the southwest and the sun came out once or twice. It certainly wasn't shorts weather.
There was more cherry cheer and friendly banter in my group than good golf, however, I must say that Phil Haynes, Mark "Podge" Rogerson and Anton Galloway played far better golf than I could muster. Moruya golf course was closed because it was under water in many areas but that didn't stop their professional Rob Green and their general manager, Ken Brown from playing and it was great to see them at Narooma again.
The winners on Saturday included Bill Durnan in A grade with 39 points. This is very good golf in the conditions, and off a low handicap. He was two shots better than Marty Brooker and four better than Graham Kerr. I am sure it was Graham's golf carts skid marks in the gully at 18 that were as black as the ace of spades. Not sure though of the guy, unknown to me, who took a drop in the depths of the same gully, where I also ended up. Perhaps he was just finishing on a social note.
In B grade Ian Harris won on a count back from Ken Radburn and Bob Coulson with 34 points, whereas in C grade Gordon Bird was too good with 37 points.
In the Ladies, Jenny Everson took the honours with 25 points.
Early on Sunday there was a shotgun 4 Ball Best Ball held at Narooma in memory of Terry Gibbons, who passed away many months ago. His wife Lorraine and friends no doubt enjoyed the sunnier skies. They are going to spread Terry's ashes at the third hole, Hogan's hole too many and no doubt one of Terry's favourites. Terry was a nice man, I didn't know him well but enjoyed his company once or twice years ago. He always seemed to have a smile on his face. Vale Terry Gibbons.
Lastly, a reminder that the next FSCGA veterans competition is at Bermagui on July 31. I will try to make if I can.
That is it for this week and I hope you all have a good week ahead.
Cheers and good health, Bill Baker
