Social bowls winners circle
Wednesday, July 15 - On a what is the weather going to do sort of day, 46 bowlers (seven rinks triples and one of pairs) nominated for the Maggsy Draw afternoon of bowls. With the draw on the day to determine the winners was the team that scored the most shots over five mystery ends. And the team that scored most shots over those mystery ends consisted of Warren Bender, John Downie and Col Armstrong with a total of 10 shots and the runners-up were Joe Halsey, welcome back Joe, Joe Borg and Dennis Maggs with a total of eight shots. The first resting toucher of the day went to Col Blinky Spears achieved at 1326 hours.
Saturday, July 18 - Jackpot Joker day drew 24 snowmen (six rinks pairs) to contest the $340 jackpot on offer. The mystery draw to define the winners on the day was the side that scored the highest number of shots. That side was Kevin Goodridge and Ken Bennie with 26 shots over Warren Bender and Jeremy Seaton, 17. The second placed side was Ron Douglass and Mo Hinds 25 shots defeating Brian Walton (visitor) and John Spees 19. A lucky rink was then drawn; rink 1 with the winning skip Paul Naylor on that rink cutting the deck of cards in an attempt to come up with the Joker, but all he could manage was the eight of clubs. So the Jackpot now stands at $360 for next Saturday, July 25, and the deck of cards one card less. We do have two greens at Narooma, so enter your teams; you gotta be in it to win it!
Sunday, July 19 - Sunny Sunday social mixed bowls sure lived up to its name. The day could not have been sunnier. The bowlers enjoyed it so much that neither side wanted to win, so they drew the match and shared the winnings. Those sides were: Shirley Pilgrim, Brian Walton and Jan Rapkins up against Gail Palmer, Bev Kellerman and Des Speckman each with 15 shots.
Semi final of Club Fours Championship played on Wednesday. The sides were Jim Gibson, Mo Hinds, John and Jay Breust versus Garry Evans, Paul Read, Neville Mitchell and Keith Pickett. The match was going neck and neck up until the last three ends when Jay and his men took off with the match, winning 24 shots to 19. Well done to Jay and his team. Next match in the championship is the final, watch the notice board for when it is to be played.
Also played were two matches in the club mixed fours championship, with the team of Dawn Kenny, Leila Gosper, Jeremy Seaton and Peter Robson against Paul Read, Rod Holman, Coral Read and Denise Holman. The win went to Dawn Kenny 23/15. The other match was played with the win going to Jai Breust, John Breust, Heather McGourty and Pam Grant 20/17 from Greg Ryan, John Spees, Sue Wales and Margaret Naylor.
Until next time this is Ditch Rink and Jaik signing off

THE Goose failed again to make Monday’s game again played in fine weather as his right eye wasn’t right and had to be fixed before he could write this report. Thanks to the Adams family’s little boy Ken who organised everybody and bowls got underway playing straight through due to the possibility of an icy wind change.
The game decider was again the “lowest winning margin” and the winners on two were the pairing of John McClose-Road and Ken Bennie from runners-up on 5, Rod Holman, Roger C Heel and Neddy J. The resting toucher went to president Keith but the $437 jackpot didn’t go off. With the return of Ralph the raffle was rattled with prizes going everywhere.
On Thursday the sun was shining brilliantly at 12.30pm and for the next hour, but no-one was there to have a game with the returning Goose who had changed his style (some say what style) due to his retina having measles so he was able to use one of the spots as an aiming point and with some unbelievable results. Dare I say he was spot on and what a pity no-one was there to see it. Also the rains came again, justifying the earlier decision to call the game off, and the Goose headed home with raindrops or was it tears, streaming down his cheeks possibly due to a lack of a brim on his hat.
Results in the quarter-final of the Men’s 2-bowl Triples championship resulted in three fairly even contests so far. Barry Branchfruit, Corey the Live-rim and skip gospeller Bob had a roller coaster ride against the two Wayne’s and skip Bud-in Norm after Norm’s team shot out early to lead by six at the seventh only to be countered by Bob and his disciples with five on the eighth and levelling the score on the ninth. Norm’s lot shot away again to lead by seven at the 15th but Bob and co evened things up again at the 18th and the 21st and then scored 7/2 over the last four ends to win 29/19. In another keen contest Brett or is it Graham, John McFord model and a fitter Marty were given a fright when Gary Lavis, Roger the Cheel and my other feathered cobber Peter D (both of whom at the end, I’m sure, would have preferred to be fishing) led by six after three, but Marty’s mob evened the score by end seven then went on to lead by six at the 11th, maintaining it to the 16th end. Peter’s flock got within four by end 22 but Marty’s mob stormed home scoring six in the last three ends to win 29/19. Ray dun Barman, our welsh Neddie and skip John Solo-rgan had an easier match against Bill Drury, a quieter, tiler Jeff and Pommie Pete leading by eight at end eight, cut back to two by end 12, but blowing out to lead by 13 at the 19th end which Pete’s trio cut back to five by the 24th but the end result was 24/18 to John and his team.
The fourth game between punter Alan, Bob PD and skip Keith Bo-wet-tie over the trio of windward Leigh, Finn the hanson and captain Cook will be played Monday afternoon to determine the last team to join those winners above in the semi-finals.
Dalmeny women’s bowls
WITH the Triples Championship played there was no social bowls. The final has been delayed for a week and will now be played on Tuesday, July 28. The ladies going through to the final are Pat Cameron, Lois Macgregor and Kathy Ryan against Gabby Cheel, Margaret Laker and Barbara Wort. The prize winners were Pat Cameron, Lois MacGregor and Kathy Ryan, runners up Gabby Cheel, Margaret Laker and Barbara Wort. This is not a misprint, these girls were the winners and the finalists of the triples. Anyone confused, because I am? There was no spider and no resting touchers, although we all tried hard. The raffles were won by Gabby Cheel and Margaret Laker. The only birthday girl on the 18th is Mary Mangan. Don’t forget the quarterly and AGM at 10am on July 29.
