What are you working on at the moment?
Creating the Art & About landing page for City of Sydney; lecturing and tutorials on information architecture at the University of Sydney; practising the Hock Salto [a trick on the flying trapeze] for the Brookvale Show
What would you like to be working on in the future?
More skroll-r-graphics like Magna Carta and some personal projects, like cool video/web/interaction/data visualisation stuff.
What was your view of science/technology/engineering/maths before you took it up?
Both my parents were maths teachers - maths is in my genes. There was no before.
Who inspired you during your studies and why?
Sixty40's Mark Simpson and Matt Taylor, Alex Trochet, Jakob Nylund I actually saw all these people speak at a Semi Permanent and was blow away with them. Sixty40 made such cool animation and added all these cool hidden elements in the final products, Alex Trochet does the most beautiful polished and original lettering and illustration, Jakob is has really beautiful design styles that are really diverse and is just so lovely.
Who inspires you now and why?
Matt Taylor at The Explainers because he's all action and getting stuff done, not a jerk to work with (and we work together on really cool projects), he generally has his sh*&t together and Mark Simpson cause he's crazy random and fun and you can just totally see it in his work, my brother cause he's all about business.
Name three of the big issue you think need to be solved (by science or technology)?
- Internet speeds. Oh man, that kills me.
- I guess education. Half of my job now is explaining things to people that are really quite simple but no one knows!
What advice would you give to the younger you?
You're okay, Kat - just do your own thing and don't put so much pressure on yourself.
How do you think Australian society views people in STEM careers?
Possibly that it's quite boring. Especially sitting at a computer all day.
How do you think we could change that perception?
Embrace geographical independence, digital nomadism and work offsite.
What are your passions outside of your profession?
Flying trapeze, scuba diving, travel, music, my car, cats.
What's one assumption people make about you?
That I'm a designer not a coder.
