FOR many the big news this week in Narooma was the re-opening of the pool after seven long winter weeks. I spoke to one gentlemen on Wednesday, as I was about to have my first swim for a while, and he has been driving to Ulladulla for his aquatics training. Keen you would have to be and if you know folk who love to swim then you will appreciate same. The water was 25 degrees and according to my swimming offsider, Janice, the water was up to 27 degrees on Friday. The ocean temperature is around 15-16. Brrr.

New Infrastructure at Narooma
After swimming I ducked down to the area around the 8th hole to see how the new paths were going. There, under greens staff supervision were volunteers Terry O'Callaghan, Phil Haynes, Ian Vincent, Laurie Holmes and Bodgie Lee putting finishing touches to the new concrete path from the tee to the new bridge. Meanwhile, council workers were doing likewise up the hill past the camping area. A bit of a coincidence but two projects and only one of them paid for by ratepayers. No prizes for guessing which one.
Once again the value of our volunteers at Narooma golf club was clear to all prepared to look. Well done everyone.
Thursday's Stableford Competition
Clear blue skies greeted us and it was already 11 degrees at 0830 and although the nor'easter treated us to some air conditioning it reached a pleasant 17 during the afternoon.
The greens were fast and tricky and the course has certainly dried out, what with persistent winds and no rain. It was a fun day with Peter Jones and Bodgie Lee and none of us played all that well but we tried. The results show Nigel Roberts returning to the winners list with 40 points, a couple ahead of the smooth swinging Bob Ackling, to take out A grade. Well-known local painter and retired linguist Russell Naumann won B grade one better than Rory Kleeman and the consistent Chris Eardley. C grade was a close affair with Terry Pickles picking up first prize with 37 points and winning on a count back from Ian Vincent and Peter Kape.
Saturday's Stableford Competition
Another fine day with a forecast maximum of 23 degrees. Bloody near tropical but again the nor'easter kept us cool. Riding in a cart with my hernia is a novel experience and until I have surgery later in the year, will be a regular occurrence 'for moi'. What’s more one feels fresh after the game, unlike the feeling after you have walked the course, when I usually feel pleasantly pooped. I played with Garry Ebeling, Les Campbell and a guy from the Woodlands club in Victoria, Michael Meneghin a 7 handicapper and playing his first game at Narooma. He put us to shame with his drives in particular. I only lost three balls, unlike Thursday when I lost five. Les presented me with a bag of Pro V's, as he usually does several times a year, before the game. Thank you again Les Campbell. He goes hunting for Pro V's most Sunday mornings.
The results indicate Robert Sayers winning A grade by one point whereas in B grade the smiling and thirsty Scott Kennedy, with 40 points, just made it ahead of Alby Donnelly and Dick Carter. Brian Murray was the winner in C grade, two points ahead of the fast finishing Bob Steel and Otto Schrey. In the ladies, Jenny Wuttke-Hayes was the winner once again with 41 points and she also picked up the nearest the pin at Hogan's, the 3rd hole. Nice shot Jenny! Did you sink the putt?
Board Elections
Members are reminded to vote this week. Nominees and details are on the noticeboard in the Sylvia Donohue Lounge.
The weather forecast is for some rain over the next few days. Let us hope it is worthwhile and as I write, midday Sunday, it is looking promising. Time for lunch at Blue Earth in Bodalla and then off to the movies in The Kinema, to see The Last Cab to Darwin. Darwin, now there is a nice place to visit in winter.
Have a great week folks and I will catch you out and about sometime soon.
Cheers and regards, Bill Baker
