Traditionally, the Bush fire Danger Period begins September 1 on the Far South Coast, however fire permits are not yet required for the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla local government areas due to continued benign weather conditions and a significant increase in fuel moisture content.
The Bush Fire Danger Period for the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla for 2015 will commence on October 1.
NSW RFS Superintendent John Cullen said the significant rainfall event experienced throughout the Far South Coast area has resulted in reduced potential for fire activity across both local government areas.
Prior to this rainfall event many areas were showing signs of drying out and we completed some important hazard reduction burning.
While the rains have provided a welcome delay to the fire season the forecast models are indicating that we are likely to experience a challenging summer.
Superintendent Cullen said “Landholders are encouraged to take advantage of the milder conditions and use the opportunity to ensure their properties are well prepared for summer.
Every resident should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan and make sure every member of their household knows what to do in the event of a fire”.
“If you do wish to burn prior to the commencement of the Bush Fire Danger Period, you must still follow all the normal procedures, such as notifying neighbours and your local fire authority, checking whether any further approvals are required and having an adequate water supply on site,” Superintendent Cullen said.
“It is your responsibility to prevent the spread of fire from your property, meaning it is important that you do not leave fires unattended.
“If a fire does escape, it is essential that you call Triple Zero (000) immediately so that emergency services can respond quickly and minimise the damage.”

Visit the RFS and “Get Ready” Narooma!
THE Narooma Rural Fire Service brigade will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday, September 12 from 10am to 2pm and will have lots of interesting things for everyone of all ages.
Summer is just around the corner and it’s time for everyone to “Get Ready” for the incoming bush fire season.
This includes checking in with everyone who lives in your house about your Bush Fire Survival Plan, which is what you will do, take with you and go to in time of an emergency.
Your plan should also include arrangements for children, pets and livestock too, who should also be considered when you choose a location to relocation relocate to. You may not be able to return home for several days.
On the “Get Ready” day there will be lots of other activities for the kids to do including a face-painter from 11am to 1pm, plus a sausage sizzle and for the adults, tips on completing bush fire survival plans, plus fire-prone maps for you to see where your property fits with the overall bush fire risk management plan.
As was the case last year, the brigade will be running tutorials on the hour for any groups that want help with completing their bush fire survival plans.
Last year, 40 households completed their plans, including one commercial accommodation facility, which is a great result.
The Narooma RFS brigade will also be part of the Summer Safety Expo display, with all the other emergency services at the Narooma Rotary Markets on September 27.
