WE have all heard the expression "a week is a long time in politics" espoused by any number of journalists and commentators on radio, television and / or in the print media. Well, the past week to 10 days have been huge and there has been little let up.

Nationally we have a new and popular prime minister in Malcolm Turnbull, elected on our son Liam's 34th birthday, the September 15. I thought it was interesting to read that our federal member, Dr Peter Hendy, was a keen supporter of the change of leadership and he is in the new ministry.
Thursday's Stableford Competition
The golf at Narooma last Thursday was pretty popular and the results are indicative of players in form on a day that reached 16 degrees and with a couple of light showers. Character forming performances in all grades is how I read it. Firstly in A grade Rory Kleeman returned to the winner’s podium with 40 points, one better than Justin "big hitting" Bennett and a further point back the charming and talented Phil Haynes.
In B grade James O'Sullivan edged out the in-form Anton Galloway on a count back with Gordon Roberts hot on their heels one point behind on 37 points. A close set of results once again. Similarly in C grade Alan Cheale won with a healthy 41 points, one better than Stephen Paul and two up on David Alexander. Ball prizes went as high as 36 points, which suggests good scores were the norm.
While these games were being concluded Janice and I were driving home from the Gold Coast and as we approached Grafton we could see the storm darkening the skies and heavy rain starting to fall. Hail followed and we pulled over and rested as visibility was poor. Did you see the News on Television that night? Well several channels showed Race 4 at Grafton starting in wet conditions and finishing in a haze of ice and hail with little if any vision. Unfortunately there were casualties with two riders injured and a horse having to be put down. The temperature dropped from a warm 28 degrees to 14 degrees in five minutes according to my cars thermometer. Scary stuff and much like the Anzac Day storm we had here at Potato Point.
Saturday's Stableford Competition
Excellent scores are evident in all grades once again. In A grade the formidable Peter Boyle was the victor with 41 points and he was three clear of Dominic Connaughton who beat the consistent and straight hitting Chris Brown on a count back. Ron Manly won B grade with a big total of 42 points with the next best Bodgie Lee with 38 points which was one better than the third placed Gordon Roberts. Kevin Burrows also scored 42 points to take out C grade and he was one point ahead of Gary Leahy. In the Ladies competition, Deirdre Landells was again the winner with a good score of 39 points.
By the way I note that Kevin Burrows had an eagle at the 15th hole and collected an eagles nest of 14 balls for his two shot winner on a par 4 hole. Excellent golf!
Congratulations to all the winners and I look forward to my regular golf games at Narooma resuming this week. The weather looks promising and I am keen after a few weeks away with family in the sunshine state.
It is nice to be home and I look forward to catching up with a lot of you in the near future.
Good health and regards, Bill Baker
