This year, there were displays and demonstrations from Narooma Surf Life Saving Club, Narooma VRA rescue squad, Narooma Marine Rescue, Narooma’s Police, Narooma, Dalmeny and Tilba Rural Fire Service brigades and Narooma Fire & Rescue.
Quite a few families took part in the hunt for “gems of wisdom” with treasure maps, designed to encourage them to interact with and find out information from all the volunteer and emergency service groups.
The family whose completed treasure map was drawn out of the box at the end of the day was the Jorgensen family of Narooma, which was a special outcome as Shaun Jorgenson from Narooma Fire & Rescue and Narooma SLSC was one of co-founders of the event concept, together, with fellow SLSC volunteer Gillian Kearney.
Anecdotal feedback has been that that even more attendees came to the event despite a chilly start, with a lot of them coming from outside the area.
Highlights of the event included the fat fire simulator presented by Fire & Rescue as well as the RFS “Smoke-House” that simulates a burning house.
There were two fire truck mini simulators, one made by Dalmeny volunteer firefighter Jason Snell, which made its “maiden voyage” on the day, complete with wooden flames to simulate “knock down”.
Also popular was the VRA’s “jaws of life” demonstration and SLSC IRB display with some Nippers demonstrating a relay event. The police also had a Highway Patrol vehicle on display.
For the first time too, there was a full display of an almost complete range of fire-fighting vehicles in Tilba to Dalmeny Fire Services including a RFS command vehicle, which was a huge hit with the kids.
“The main objective is to keep safety in the fore-front of all everyone’s mind as summer approaches and Rotary is to be commended for supported initiatives like this to help keep the community safe,” co-founder Gillian Kearney said.
