Jackson Wood of Tilba took advantage of the recent stormy waters having a great session around the rocks at Mystery Bay on the weekend.
Using cunjevoi from the rocks, he managed to get eight fish including bream, luderick and black drummer, proving the old adage that “rough weather stirs them up.”
Once the swell has settled and things are safe, the fishing around the rocks can be great.
Jackson and others have also been getting the odd flathead out of Lake Corunna, with one angler on Tuesday getting 14 flathead to 49cm.
Old mates Hippie Carradus and Dash Bowater had a good session on Barlow's Bay on Saturday getting a mix of tailor and salmon on plastics and metals, as well as a few flathead. Just don't ask Hippie how he dived in after his rod the next day!
The Clyde system has also been fishing well for local guide Stuart Hindson, who had been able to put his clients on some good flathead and a jewfish.
Local fly creator Evan Jardine has been getting some good luderick on both his special green weed fly, as well as the more traditional float rig.
He also just returned from the Snowy Mountains and reckons it has been the best he has seen in as many as 10 years.
The rainbows were averaging around 40cm in Eucumbene Lake and they were gorging themselves on small black beatles. The river was fishing really well with some late spawners, including a monster close to 7lb that he battled on Melbourne Cup Day.
Out wide, John Moore of Narooma Fishing Charters reported on Sunday that water conditions have gone from bad to worse, at Montague Island the temperature has dropped to 16.2c and the colour has gone to a darker green.
“The reefs have basically shut down, but there are plenty of good sized tiger flathead in the 56m contour on the south east of the island.”
But things had improved by Tuesday.
Brad from Philip Island, Victoria on Westernport Bay - home of big snapper- went out for a trip to Tuross Head reefs with John, and landed two nice snapper on running sinker rigs using squid heads for bait. One fish at 3kg and the other at just under 2.5kg – very fat fish in prime condition.
They also got another four nice reddies and some mixed fish - but flathead were very few and far between.
“The good news is that the water temp is just touching 18c and is slowly starting to clear - hopefully it will continue,” John said Tuesday.
According to Bermagui Bait & Tackle, if you did get out over the last week, the yellowfin tuna were still there just over the edge. 'Footloose' managed four fish to over 40kg.
Benny Bolton from Charter Fish Narooma got a heap of gummies on Tuesday and then went out after those yellowfin.
Narooma local longliner Fisco was also out there in about 1000 fathoms with about 40 yellowfin on board already.
The theory is that the cold, green water, while extending as far north as Jervis Bay, is only surface deep and with better water on the way.
NSGFC report
A great snapper caught by Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club member John Swinhoe in New Zealand. Well done John, sounds like you are having a great time. John and Les Waldock are currently on a fishing trip in New Zealand and it seems John is coming up with the goods again.
The reports I have been getting from the locals are quite a few flathead and some snapper and the kingfish are out there, but a bit under size and as usual you have got to beat the seals.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help out with the canteen kids on the weekend of the 28-29 of November, if you are available for these dates please let me know on 0412 100 596.
As usual the NSGFC rooms, situated on Riverside drive near the Inlet restaurants and the boat ramp, is open for drinks and snacks from 4 pm till 9 pm every Friday. Visitors are most welcome to come along and have a chat with the members, share fish stories (greatly enhanced after the first drink), make some new friends, cook a steak on the barbeque or maybe even some fish.- Jan Hemmingsen
