After a wet week in Narooma, the sun peeped through on Sunday just in time for Nippers. Mind you, the trusty board riders bore the brunt of the wet on Friday at the Net - but once the kids were in the water they didn't seem to care too much about the rain.

The morning started well with the older children taking on challenging conditions on their boards and the youngsters displaying their combined strength and team-work in pulling the Inflatable Rescue Boat through the water. Flags activity is starting to get more competitive and once again the march past drills had the attention of on-lookers.
The beach was a busy place to be with both Bronze Medallion trainees and requalifying members completing their run, swim, run along with the SRC group performing rescue techniques.
We are well into Nippers season as we head into Week 4 and we look forward to seeing Nippers and helpers alike at both board training at the Net on Friday (4.30pm) and back at the beach on Sunday 22 November at 9am.
Caring for our coastline
Naroomarites are well known for being community-driven and for caring for their pristine environment and this town's recent win in the Keep NSW Beautiful Sustainable Coastal Community Awards is a testament to their commitment.
Narooma won the NSW State Award due to the many sustainability projects that contribute to keeping our coastal environment healthy including specific SLSC targeted projects.
The projects were a Nippers Surf Education 'Take 3 for the Sea' awareness about marine debris, litter and cigarette litter education; interpretive signage about plastic marine debris and fishing tackle recovery bins at the beach; a partnership between Narooma SLSC and Narooma Little Lake Landcare for litter reduction and awareness (reducing litter by 89 per cent in hotspots); council and community partnership with Environment Protection Agency's 'Hey Tosser' retail car-park litter reduction program which saw nine smoker stations installed at the plaza; and an energy and water audit for efficiency of the Narooma SLSC Clubhouse.
The club praised Gilly Kearney for her ongoing volunteer commitment and working to raise awareness in the community about protecting a unique coastline.
The Club's Occy mascot also made an appearance on Sunday.
Helmets granted
Thanks to the efforts of Gilly Kearney, the club has successfully secured a Healthy Communities and Seniors Week Grant of $450. This grant will assist the club to purchase new helmets which will help keep IRB and surf boat crews safe (in the event of roll overs) as well as protect SRC instructors from wayward rescue tubes.
