The incredible hot marlin bite continues off Bermagui and Narooma with game boats returning to Bermagui harbour with multiple flags flying. There have also been a sprinkling of dolphinfish out there. On a sour note, there was a marlin frame dumped in Corunna Lake on Saturday. Anglers should seriously consider tag and release, and of course dispose of the large skeletons responsibly.

There continues to be good snapper catches on the reefs, while Dash from the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler and fishing buddy Hippie had a cracker day on Wallaga Lake on Saturday. After eight legal bream up to 40cm, three of them on surface lures, they scored 20+ legal sized flathead biggest being 59cm and 67cm, with many others in the mid 40s.
Up at Tackle World Moruya, Graham reports that bream and flathead are still getting caught down the front of the Moruya River using poddies and nippers. The bream are still hitting surface lures so don't be shy to throw one while drifting around the flats. With the storms we've been having lately the bass are on the move down the rivers they will still happily take your cicada lure as they swim past.
Tuross has been fishing rather well with big flathead and jewies coming in mainly getting caught on live poddies. Whiting and luderick are hanging around down the front in the shallows. Find where the sandy patches are around the weed and try using nippers or worms and you should be golden. Getting a feed of prawns out of Coila is still rather easy so grab a light and net and head out before it's too late.
Beaches are still producing big whiting and bream with the odd salmon and tailor thrown in. Snapper and mowies are coming in off the shallower reefs along with some nice pigfish. While Graham reports marlin and dolphinfish up north too.
Club Narooma Bowlo Fishing Club report
Club Narooma Bowlo Fishing Club held its monthly fishing comp over the weekend with the weather playing its part and the fish were also playful. There were plenty of winners for the comp with Peter Shakeshaft taking the overall points then we had Dave Clark, Beck Smart, Bridget Smart, Greg Tiffen Will Tiffen, Mick Cavic, Brenda Setzer, Adam Giffen, Mick Ugly Stick, Karen Spackman, Wayne Giffen and Gary Landells all get a trophy for their efforts and the kids were all looked after thanks to Narooma Fishing and Camping.
There were some nice fish weighed in with some big bream, trevally, whiting and salmon keeping the weigh-master busy. Next comp will be March 4-6 and with both charter boats full, it should be a good turnout. Now for a little housekeeping – members that got the first lot of EPIRBS back in 2010 well there time is up and if they are going to be disposed of please drop off at Narooma Fishing and Camping shop – next to servo on flat - as they will be picked up by Maritime for proper disposal.
It was good to see DPI Fisheries at work on Saturday with a nice catch of abalone poachers at Narooma Bridge. We had a visit from the Primary Industries Minister last week and it was brought to his attention that 95 per cent of recreational fishing funds are spent outside all Marine Parks and needs to be fixed as the system needs reviewing before the next state election. There are new rosters up on the fishing clubs notice board for raffle duties and the final call for Buckenderra has been done for our March trip.
On the fishing front I have never seen so many marlin being tagged just of our door step and we have nice fat snapper at the island. But the kingfish are very shy this year lots of under size and that also should be addressed and bought back to 60cm as it’s a waste throwing them back to feed seals anyway. The prawns are still running and the place is a little quite so lets enjoy it because Easter is not far away. – Fishfingers
Other fishing club news: In other fishing club news, the Tuross Head Fishing Club is hosting its flagship event, The Flathead & Bream Tournament, on March 12-13. More than 200 anglers are expected for this annual catch and release fishing competition, attracting lure and fly fishers from all over Australia. The Million Dollar View Narooma Flathead Challenge, also a catch and release event, is coming up on February 26-28 and more than 80 teams are expected to take to Wagonga Inlet.
The holiday break has been encouraging for the fishing enthusiasts. Members of the Bermagui Country Club Social Anglers’ Club plan their first competition for 2016 – on and off shore - over the week-end of 12/13/14 February with weigh-in by 12.30pm on the Sunday.
