BARTENDERS from Bodalla and Bermagui will be among 186 bar staff from NSW and the ACT vying to be named the most UGLY, in the Leukaemia Foundation’s most quirky fundraising event, UGLY Bartender of the Year.
Throughout October, Sean Taylor from the Bermagui Beach Hotel, Sarah Cefai from the Bermagui Country Club, Janelle Uleman from the Bodalla Arms Hotel, and Melissa Ricketson from the Narooma Golf Club, will join bartenders across Australia hosting distinctive events and have a lot of fun to help regional families impacted by leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders.
“UGLY stands for ‘understanding, generous, likeable you’ and this event offers a fun way for bartenders to raise serious funds to assist people with blood cancer and related blood disorders,” said Chris McMillan, general manager of the Leukaemia Foundation in NSW and ACT.
“Only one bartender can be named NSW or ACT UGLY Bartender of the Year, but together they’re expected to raise $185,000 to help the Leukaemia Foundation continue to provide regional families with a fully furnished place to call home in the city during treatment,” she said.
“Every $80 raised gives regional families a place to call home for a night so their collective goal equates to providing free accommodation to 25 families for three months.
Chris said that with 57 people in NSW and ACT diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma every week, everyone who backed their local UGLY bartender would help keep families together when they needed each other most.
Competitors will stand out from the crowd in their t-shirts with ‘I’m UGLY – I need help!’ printed on them.

The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families with leukaemia’s, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the community’s support.
