The weather and conditions were best for the morning field on Thursday, April 14. Peter Ward won A grade with a fine 41 points and in B grade Allan Maddison took the honours with 37 points. In C grade Graham Cooke won with 39 points.

The following Saturday it was a 4 Ball Best Ball and the winners were Henry George and Brendan Matters with 54 points. I have never seen a score like that and our professional Colin Holmes agrees. Runners-up were Barry Podmore and the rapidly improving Hal Fraser with 52 points, another great score.
Whilst this was going on I was in Canberra playing at Duntroon and getting psyched up for the Raiders game versus Cronulla. We both failed abysmally. We returned to see 77mm in our rain gauge on Monday afternoon and I believe falls varied from 30mm in Bodalla to 100mm around in Kianga. Another 6mm mid week and the dams at Narooma are nearly full again.
And so to the week just gone and to Thursday’s Stableford competition. Great weather for golf, 23 degrees and a light northerly made it a great day to be alive and on Narooma's great golf course.
Justin Bennett was too good once again and his 42 points gave him the A grade first prize. Neil Towers had to be content with second with 40 and John Breust was third with 39 points. In B grade Derek Moritz had 43 points to win, two in front of retired teacher and artist/linguist, Russell Naumann. Simon Carr, our tall and competent pro shop, starter and assistant was third with 40 points. I am wondering whether Hal Fraser and Simon Carr are spending some of their quieter moments in the hi-tech golf centre. Why not, I would too. In C grade it was the charming Trevor Bennett who won with 40 points and he was just two up on big John Matthews, with the laconic James Dickson third with 37 points.
Last Saturday and it was another Stableford event on a day that gave us a light and at times gusty south sou'wester turning southerly in the afternoon. The town clock registered 20 degrees just on midday and clear skies made it an encouraging day. I played in the last group and we hit off about 12.20pm. The interesting thing about us was that all of us played off a handicap of 14. Tim Short, Mark Westwood with a cold and slight hangover, Les Campbell and I. Mark reminisced and didn't win a prize but by gum he is good company as are most at Narooma.
Andrew Thompson took out A grade with 35 points, one better than Jon Guyver and Robert Piper. Andrew is a tough nut and survived a serious medical condition recently whilst playing golf in the Riverina and was back playing golf in record time. In B grade his former colleague as a professional fireman, Greg Riley, took the honours with 37 points and he was only one ahead of Greg Collis and our hard working director Peter Kearney.
Hal Fraser, wow man he had 47 points to win C grade by a mere 7 points from young and impressive Sophie Brown with 40 points and Blake Thornhill third with 38 points. Please note that the Ladies and Men play in the competitions together on most Saturdays and that is also reflected in the nearest the pins this week with Rebekah Jubb and Jayne Hotchkiss winning at the 3rd and 9th respectively and Vince Harper and Laurie Holmes picking up the prizes at the 14th and 17th holes.
