Less than nine months after the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in Brazil, 2015 Skillaroo and international silver medallist Jyothi Forman has added another honour to an already impressive list of accomplishments: Being named one of the Government’s newest Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors.

The Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors Program aims to raise the status of Australian Apprenticeships through profiling real apprenticeship and traineeship success stories on a national level. Managed by the Department of Education and Training, it has appointed over 100 individuals across all states and territories as Australian Apprenticeships Ambassadors since its inception in 2011.
“It's an honour to me that I can promote the trade of jewellery and apprenticeships in general as extremely rewarding career options,” says Jyothi. “I hope I can inspire young people to find a career that they are passionate about. I want to encourage people to search their options – not just university, but to discover careers in trades as well.”
Jyothi is already proudly representing trade and skill-based careers. Newly qualified as a jeweller, she is now training the newest apprentice at her workplace, Georgie’s Fine Jewellery in Narooma. She will also be reversing roles from competitor to judge this October at the 2016 WorldSkills Australia National Competition, Melbourne, where she looks forward to seeing what the next generation brings to the table.
To this year’s competitors, she says, “Make the most of this incredible opportunity. Be as prepared as possible and be confident in your skills. I found that the more training I did the more confident I was with my skills. The best feeling after competing is knowing that you gave it all you had, you don't want to walk away wishing you had done more to prepare.”
WorldSkills Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation that provides young Australians aged 23 and under the opportunity to gain new skills, compete against their peers in their chosen trade and fast track their skills and career development. Established in 1981, their purpose is to promote and build a skills respect culture by celebrating skills excellence, inspiring young people and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their trade and skill talent. This is achieved through competitions held on a regional, national and international level.
