Bowls tournament thanks
A tournament of this size could not be held without the generous sponsorship of the Narooma Sporting and Services Club Group and their sponsorship is much appreciated. The assistance of John, Merrie, Tony, Don and Dennis who did all the work in the background helped to make the tournament run smoothly. Thanks to the umpires for their diligent service, the hard working ladies from the Narooma Women's Bowling Club for providing afternoon sustenance for the players. Thanks again to the Women's Bowling Club and also to Rod Holman and Dawn who provided the succulent Rapley Midtown Quality Meat's hamburgers and steak sandwiches and salads to feed the grateful bowlers. Thank you to the NSSC office and bar staff who catered for all the needs of the bowlers. In particular a big thank you to Rob and the very able Green's staff for producing the greens in such great order.

Who are we voting for?
As Malcolm morphs into Tony, in an ugly and all too familiar Trumpy smudge of bigotry, fears and blatant lies, the serious question of who on earth we would actually be voting for if we vote coalition in our crucial marginal seat, grows ever more significant.
Is Malcolm just playing with us for the time being and will heroically revert to his 'liberal', republican, agile, twentyfirst century persona once he's PM in his own right? Or is the conversion permanent and we now have a far richer 'Tony' in a rather better suit, ensconced in a Sydney harbourside mansion?
And then we must consider the possibility of a very narrow coalition victory or a hung parliament. We'd then have to expect more savage coalition infighting and the likelihood of a Turnbull deposition. And might we then find we have inadvertantly voted for a lazarus Abbott or a Morrison or a Bishop or a Bernardi, or who knows what nonentity as PM, and the consequent utterly unpredictable dither of policies?
Our incumbent MP Dr Hendy was a major player in the deposition of Abbott - he really ought inform us who his next favorite might be. Otherwise the coalition are merely offering us a lottery - with only one guarantee - no winners for the voters.
This current Federal government has presided over the destruction of Australia's greatest natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef, even as that government has whole-heartedly supported and encouraged the archaic and collapsing coal mining industry that very substantially contributes to that destruction. If this this squandering of assets is what 'jobs and growth' mean to a supposedly business-oriented government then in my view, the coalition have utterly forfeited the right to govern our great nation.

Grey nurse debate
The Grey Nurse Shark debate has been alive in Narooma since 2002. Unfortunately much of it has been based on misleading facts presented by Green conservation groups.
Those with a long memory will remember the hysterical claims, by the Nature Conservation Council, in 2004 of ‘only 350 Grey Nurse Sharks in NSW’ and ‘The Grey Nurse shark will be extinct in 6 years’. These claims were incorrect due to a flawed scientific document.
A NSW Fisheries scientist (Otway, 2000) incorrectly suggested numbers at 300 in 2000. This led to the GNS being declared a critically endangered species in 2001. In 2004 Otway did another study. He rejected a dataset that should have made this study Null. It produced a result that was demonstrably incorrect.
At a subsequent Tribunal hearing in 2007, the Nature Conservation Council attempted to have fishing banned within 1500m. of Montague Island and other ‘aggregation sites’. At this hearing the truth emerged about the flawed GNS count and the fact that Sharks were seen at many other sites. Accidental hooking was occurring all along the NSW Coast.
If this hearing, vigorously contested by recreational fishing groups including the Narooma Port Committee, was successful it would have completely stopped fishing at Montague. Further counts were undertaken and, as of 2016, it is estimated there are about 1800 to 3000 GNS in NSW waters. The Narooma Port Committee believes that the sensible restrictions in place in 2004 were more than enough to minimize fishing gear interaction. We also believe the Grey Nurse Shark does NOT satisfy the criteria for inclusion as a ‘critically endangered species’.

Cherokee nation offended
Your article titled "Cherokee-style wedding on Bermagui headland" is rife with inaccurate portrayals of Cherokee culture and is highly offensive to our people and government.
Cherokees never wore the war bonnet headdresses the couple wore, never lived in tipis as described in your article. The attire worn is a mockery of traditional Cherokee clothing and the so-called wedding ceremony is nothing like our ceremonies.
Much has been taken from the Cherokee people. Missionaries destroyed much of our spiritual culture and public schools and federal boarding schools decimated our language. Of the 320,000 Cherokee tribal citizens, less than 10% still speak our highly threatened language.
Our traditional marriage ceremony is nothing like that portrayed. We understand the unique culture of American Indian tribes may not reach the shores of in Australia. We are more than happy to share our culture with your readers.
