The shark net swimming enclosure at Narooma’s popular Bar Beach will be removed for its annual maintenance check next Tuesday, May 31.

The net will be released at its base by divers and removed by crane. Council staff then lay the net out to dry for a few weeks before removing the built-up seaweed and cleaning the net. This year, extra floats will be added to the net to offset the weight of seaweed that can drag the net down.
Council will reinstall the net in early September. Unlike the killer gill nets hung off metro areas to the north, this net is actually a barrier and does not catch marine life. It rather becomes habitat for all kinds of marine life from seahorses to octopus.
