Now for what’s been biting for those lucky enough to get out with the recent cold snap and strong winds! There have been some good black drummer off the rocks after the recent storm but beware as forecasts are calling for a whopping 7m swell this Sunday.
Narooma charter boat skipper Nick Cowley reports he fished a group of 13 at Montague Island on Saturday on both boats. They had around 30 kingfish for the group, and all were big fish, the smallest being 90cm up to the 105cm range. Nick admits the kingfish continue to be tough and “up and down” –and while there were a few around on Sunday they were just undersized.
Fellow charter skipper John Moore also got into the action at the island on Saturday morning with some very keen fishers, leaving Canberra at 3am and then heading home straight after getting off the boat.
Key from Canberra kept the 'girl' tradition alive - out fishing everyone else (all guys) with a very fat 104cm kingfish. The rest of the kings were around 97cms, add to this some nice sized bonito, snapper, mowies, and some reef fish for a bit of variety. John reports the kingfish 'fired' right before a strong SSW change hit Montague Island.
“Always a pleasure to have customers who only want to take a good feed of kings, and then let the rest go - or change target species,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
Speaking of kingfish, Darryl from Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler said one lucky local got a 78cm kingfish inside Wagonga Inlet on bream gear last week, seeing a few others too.
Darren “Dash” Bowater from the Ocean Hut had another “Wagonga Wonderland” session on the weekend. He went out for the official christening of Mark “Hippie” Carradus’ new boat and although there was no Champagne bottles broken, there were plenty of fish coming over the side.
“Salmon, tailor, trevally, flathead, bream and snapper all showed up for the birthday party. With around 50 odd assorted species and many double hook-ups all I can say is the new vessel has got the goods.”
Wallaga Lake is also firing according to the “Baron” from Bermi Bait and Tackle who got some nice bream to 44cm fishing with his mate Glen and also a whole pile of flathead – up to 60 fish total.
