Olympics connection
Some great news I would like to share with you: my eldest granddaughter Brittany has been a last-minute selection to represent Australia in the 10-metre Platform Dive in Rio. I can claim no gene credit, as the closest I had to diving was when some shares I had took a dive on the market. Exciting times and hope you will follow her fortunes during the Olympic Games. A happy grandfather.

Bike trails
Anyone interested in forming a group to explore the possibility of building Mountain Bike trails in the Narooma area are asked to contact me on 0409 224 766 or dag2546@bigpond.net.au There is a huge opportunity to add to our tourism locally by doing this.
Tasmania and even closer-by Tathra have seen a massive growth in attracting people to their areas by utilizing their State Forests and National Parks in way that is minimum impact but allows people either riding or hiking to explore our beautiful forests. Examples of using these natural spaces in an environmentally friendly way can be seen in New Zealand and in the United States. It would be great to do something like that here.

Officer thanks
In the small hours of Friday, July 29, a wheel was stolen from our Mitsubishi Mirage, parked in the driveway of our house at Kianga. May we advise the thief that he has added to the woes of the disabled octogenarian owner, who shortly to undergo spinal surgery.
This despicable act caused great inconvenience and dismay, requiring us to change our plans for hospital attendance. To those responsible for this miserable theft, my wife and I hope that the stolen wheel proves to be a bringer of bad luck to you. You certainly made our lives more difficult.
On a positive note, our call to the police was answered promptly and efficiently. My wife and I would sincerely like to thank Senior Constable Gavin Warner for his polite and good-humoured assessment of the incident and particularly thank him for his work, beyond the call of duty, in installing our car’s spare wheel. This community is fortunate to have officers of this calibre working on our behalf. Thank-you Gavin.

Narooma has big heart
On behalf of Trevor Bennett, president Paul Naylor and the members of Narooma RSL Sub-Branch, I feel compelled to write a heartfelt thank you to the businesses and community of Narooma, Tilba, Bega, Batemans Bay and Moruya, the staff, board and members of Narooma Golf Club and Club Narooma for the amazing and overwhelming support that you all gave to our inaugural Red Poppy Ball that was held on Saturday.
We had over 190 people sit down for a meal and dance to help raise awareness and funds for “Homes for Heroes” an organisation that many may not aware of, but quietly goes about helping to heal our contemporary veterans from wounds both seen and unseen, with coordinating rehabilitation holistically.
If we imagine the whole population of Narooma, North Narooma, Kianga and Dalmeny all living on the streets, that is the amount of homeless veterans we have in Australia currently and it takes a lot of work and a coordinated approach to help prevent veteran suicide and repair the damage that contemporary combat related conflict creates.
We have raised in the vicinity of $15,000 at least thus far. It has been a humbling and overwhelming response for us to experience especially as we know that our businesses in particular, get requests for donations on a continuous basis. You are the “gifts that keep giving” and we are grateful. We even received donations from Bega and Batemans Bay…all suggesting to us, that this is a noble cause, worthy of our support. Thank you all so very much. With much love and gratitude, Gillian Kearney and Trevor Bennett OAM

Thanks from the VRA
The Narooma Rescue Squad (VRA) would like to thank the Narooma Lady Golfers for the kind donation of $3517, the proceeds of the Lady Golfers Charity Golf Day on July 20. The charity day had 40 plus participants and many more at the raffles and auction following the comp. everyone had a great time playing and then afterwards during the raffles.
I would like to extend a special thank you to the businesses that donated their products and services which were either raffled or bid for during the auction. Without these businesses kind contribution the end result would not have been obtained. The proceeds of the donations have been put towards the purchase of a new Husqvarna Chainsaw from South Coast Outdoor Products, which will be used to remove fallen trees during heavy wind storms and other emergencies.
The rescue squad are always looking for new members to train for emergency situations from motor vehicle accidents, general land rescue including searching for missing persons and vertical cliff rescues. The squad meets every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 8pm at our headquarters in Golf Lane, behind the Marine Rescue building.
