The Brumbies rugby union organisation on Tuesday hosted a schools rugby union carnival at Bill Smyth Oval at Narooma attended by more than 200 girls and boys from six different schools on the Far South Coast.
Usually the six schools involved (Batemans Bay HS, Carroll College, Lumen Christie, Eden Marine HS, Bega HS and Narooma HS) compete separately in our school 7’s gala days at either end of the coast at Bega and Batemans Bay.
Due to Narooma’s central point in the shire and the great ongoing support that has been provided Paddy Penton and the other teachers of Narooma High School, the Brumbies looked to give the kids a reward for all the travel they do to compete in competitions on the coast and in Canberra.
The boys played 15 a side and the girls 10 a side with 21 teams competing on the day across two fields. The day went off without a hitch with some fierce competition across the age groups.
The highlight of the day was the girls 9/10 final where Eden Marine High School and Narooma High School battled out a 10–10 draw with Eden Marine High School being proclaimed the winner due to being the last try scorer. Several of these girls have been sighted for the Brumbies representative 7’s team competing at nationals in Perth later this year.
From a Narooma perspective, Mr Penton said it was an excellent turnout with schools from Batemans Bay to Eden. The Narooma Year 7/8 girls A team and the 9/10 girls team won their divisions. The 7/8 girls B team got their first win and the boys were competitive.
On the back of the Australian women’s 7’s rugby team getting gold at the Olympics the Brumbies have revamped their usual girls Spring 7’s to the new and improved Super 7’s Series.
This competition will be run with three competition days in Jindabyne, Braidwood and Goulburn with the finals in Canberra. On the coast Batemans Bay, Broulee, Bega and Narooma rugby union clubs are looking to enter girls and boys teams. If you wish to have your daughter or son involved please contact your local club or development officer Angus Balmaks at: angus.balmaks@brumbies.com.au
Thankyou from the Brumbies to Narooma Junior Rugby League for providing a canteen on the day.
