NAROOMA Public School’s Girls Football (soccer) team’s amazing run in the NSW Primary Schools State Knockout came to an end last Monday when they were defeated in the grand final 1-0 by Wallsend South Public School.
The girls under coach Jon Sloan, have been playing in the knockout which involves just under four hundred schools from across the state, since the start of term 2, just after Easter, and played seven unbeaten rounds to find themselves in the final. Their wins were against Moruya 3-1, Ulladulla 1-0, Tathra 1-0, Flinders (Nowra) 6-0, Jerrabomberra 5-0 and Murrumburrah 1-0 which placed them in the top four in the state.
They then travelled to Speers Point in Newcastle to play Kincumber PS in the semi-final which they won 3-0, a win which booked them a place in the final against Wallsend South PS.
Wallsend had the home ground advantage as their school is only 10km from the ground and were a good, aggressive team who attacked constantly in the first half. Midway through the half they scored the only goal of the game and despite the best efforts of the girls they could not equalise.
Though disappointed, the girls are proud of their achievement and have represented Narooma Public School wonderfully well.
Mr Sloan would like to thank the fantastic parents who supported the team, supplying transport to games as far away as Murrumburrah and Newcastle and also bearing the costs of accommodation for these games. Also a huge thank you goes to our towns two clubs, Club Narooma and the Narooma Golf Club as well as the Narooma Redbacks Soccer Club for their financial support for the girls. It is wonderful the way that our town has supported them.
