The club sent a delegation of 12 swimmers and record keeper Ray Hirst to the championships, hosted this year by the Merewether Mackerels up at Newcastle. Swimmers enjoyed a dip in the fabulous Merewether ocean baths on Saturday, then competed at the nearby Charlestown Swim Centre 50m pool on Sunday.
Swimmers also enjoyed catching up with visiting representatives from the International Winter Swimming Association, including president Mariia Yrjö-Koskinen and her daughter Elisa, both of Finland, where water temperatures as low as 2 degrees are common.
Paul O’Brien presented Elisa with a pair of Narooma Numnutz Speedos that she promptly donned for her swim event, while swimming caps were also exchanged.
The Narooma swimmers were excited to learn that they finished sixth in the signature 10-man relay, improving on their previous best placement of 12th attained when the championships were last hosted in Perth.
Narooma Numnutz have attended every national championships since it became affiliated with the WSAA and next year the event is being hosted at the Gold Coast.
