The iconic Dromedary Hotel is for sale – freehold – for $1.1 million in the restored townlet of Central Tilba, a short drive away from Narooma, Eurobodalla and Bermagui.

Central Tilba is set against the magnificent backdrop of Mt. Dromedary from which the historic pub draws its name.

The Dromedary Hotel, often sighted on the River Cottage Australia television series, is intimately linked to Central Tilba and has been a meeting place for 121 years, acting as a beacon for locals and tourists alike.

It was originally built in 1895 as a coffee palace and was named The Palace Hotel until after World War II when it was renamed after the nearby mountain landmark.

That, in itself, owes its name to Captain Cook who sighted it on April 21, 1770 and named it – unsurprisingly – for its resemblance to the hump of a Dromedary camel.

Current owners Maz and Michael Youlten took over the pub from her mother in 2011 who had run it since about 1980.

Maz, a fifth-generation Tilba resident, says the pub has received significant investment over the past five years and was ready for a new owner.

“We’ve put in a new cool room, refurbished the kitchen, renewed the wiring and plumbing and installed a new beer system,” she says.

“People love the hotel and they’re always telling me it feels like a real pub.”

The hotel’s main bar has also been renovated and the commercial kitchen is currently leased.

There is a large dining room, cool room, one poker machine, restrooms and a front verandah. Upstairs are four good sized bedrooms with three of those available for accommodation.

There’s a central bathroom, lounge and a front verandah overlooking the township.

The grounds include a spacious beer garden for alfresco entertaining and also a barn equipped with an additional bar and store room for functions, meetings and live music.

Maz says she feels it’s time for younger owners to inject their ideas and enthusiasm into the Dromedary.

“New people are moving down this way all the time and when the holiday season begins, we’re flat out from November until after Easter,” she says.

“It’s a great local community and new owners would be feel very welcome.”
