Creatures great and small
The end of 2016 is nearly upon us and as I sit back and reflect on the animal welfare year we have had, I wonder how we fitted it all in?

Just like Santa stuffing all the goodies in his sack and emptying it out again, there is so much that goes in that needs to go back out again to care for all things bright and beautiful. This year, the AWL Eurobodalla Branch has seen some changes. We are moving to a fresher, brighter and happier future for all creatures great and small.
The AWL Narooma Dog Training Club became a stand-alone branch which focuses on agility and training of dogs, so our branch, AWL Eurobodalla, focuses on caring for and rehoming surrendered animals; de-sexing and helping those less fortunate with companion animals. We are all volunteers and the love and dedication to the animals is overwhelming and mirrored by the success rate in re-homing.
We had a huge influx of more than 60 kittens, some as young as two weeks, and 99 per cent found forever homes. More than 20 dogs are now happy with new owners and we even helped a ferret and a rabbit who are now smiling as much as ferrets and rabbits can.
AWL branches receive no government funding, so we continually fund raise, and rely on our kind community and visitors.
We will continue to be like Santa’s elves: always busy. The love we give to the animals we give a new life to is unconditional. Please help if you can.
We particularly need new carers for dogs and we have several adult cats available for adoption who would love a home before Christmas.
For more details phone Elaine on 0410 016 612.
AWL promotes responsible pet ownership and all our animals are vet-checked, de-sexed, vaccinated and wormed.

Fishing for more stories
It’s great to see our local paper supporting locals.
The Abbotts are inspiring and there is a lot more to the fishing dynasty that maybe you could look into later. Des Creighton, the patriarch, is probably the last commercial fisherman who can say he fished Narooma before there was a break wall. And has he a story or two.
Hayley Abbott so rightly points out the key to their success is the confidence they have that their fishery is managed well by AFMA and in border security to prevent foreign boats poaching. We have a beautiful 90-foot boat coming to port, but the rules related to the fishing operation are strictly quota managed.
To increase effort they must buy more quota. (There will be) video surveillance on the boat to observe compliance and much more positioning devices so they can be observed where they are fishing.
Sustainability at its best.
I hope we have regular fish reports from of the new boat.

Lions active
Bermagui and District Lions wish all our members, helpers, supporters, and the community a very success prosperous New Year.
It has been a busy 2016 of fund raising and support to both the local and national community. Our doughnuts have been very successful this year, as have our BBQs and sausage sizzles and raffles.
Our regular mints and Christmas cakes are well-supported and we thank the business who have generously displayed them. During the year, we have supported Nardy House, Four Winds, the Cobargo Information Centre, the Seaside Fair and schools.
Nationally we supported Hearing Dogs, Save Sight, suicide prevention and Lions International, which helps at world wide disasters. A very special event was the Wallaga Lake Cultural Centre Music Festival, where the Lions team fed 300 revelers in a very hectic two-three hours.
At present, we are a small club. Our membership has fallen for various reasons and we are actively seeking new members.
Anyone over 18 is welcome. Your commitment is entirely up to you and you will be joining a friendly group who will welcome you.
If you would like to come a see what we do and how we operate please feel free to call Cliff on 64933792 or come to one of our dinner meetings on the first Thursday of the month at Cobargo Hotel at 7pm or the third Thursday at Bermagui Hotel at 7pm.
We will even treat you to a free meal.

Highway corridor
While checking the RMS public records in relation to the Princes Highway Corridor from Yallah to the Victorian Border, part of the documentation says the RMS met with Eurobodalla Shire Council on April 22 about it.
There was no mention of that in the response to Cr Constable’s question: has council or council staff been involved with the NSW Government; (the) local member, the Minister for Roads Transport and Maritime services; or senior staff within the Roads and Maritime Services in any discussions about developing a new princes highway corridor in the Eurobodalla Shire to better service the shire in coming years, that will alleviate highway congestion in Batemans Bay, Mogo, Moruya, Bodalla and Narooma?
What was discussed and supported by council staff at the April 22 meeting about the Princes Highway running through the Eurobodalla Shire? What do the councillors of that time know about what occurred?
