The yacht, which had no identifying markings, was discovered with no mast and no crew on board in waters halfway between Narooma and Bermagui on Thursday morning.
Acting unit commander of Marine Rescue NSW Narooma, Mark Jolly said the initial report came into the unit at about 7am of an overturned yacht two to three nautical miles, or three to four kilometres, off the entrance to Wallaga Lake and Murunna Point.
Both the Narooma unit’s vessel NA30 and the Bermagui unit’s vessel BG30 responded and headed out to the coordinates.
The crew on BG30 while heading north located various items of debris floating, while NA30 was the first to locate the upturned yacht, Mr Jolly said.
The Westpac Lifesaver rescue helicopter also arrived on the scene and its diver was able to jump in and check the hull for people. None were found.
In the meantime, the incident was handed over to Water Police in Eden who sent one of their large police vessels to tow the yacht back into Bermagui Harbour.
The yacht sunk in about 30 metres of watch. Marine Rescue Bermagui put out a radio notice notifying vessels in the area of site.
