CWA Far South Coast shows off handicraft and cookery talents at Bermagui | Photos

Cakes and crafts of the highest quality made by members of the Country Women’s Association of NSW were a feast for the eyes in Bermagui.

The CWA Far South Coast Group handicraft and The Land cookery competition was held in the town on Tuesday.

Members from the 10 branches between Batemans Bay and Eden had the opportunity to enter handmade crafts or cook up some delicious treats.

There were 58 items in the handicraft section which were judged by Ailsa Stewart from CWA’s Belmont branch.

“The standard of the work is excellent,” she said.

“I’ve been coming to judge here for quite a few years and I always find it outstanding.”

Ms Stewart said when judging an item the finishing was quite important to look at, as well as the overall construction of the work.

Group handicraft officer Marion Cullen said it was disappointing only five branches had entered in the eight item category this year.

She said 21 handicraft items were chosen to represent the group at the state competition in Tumbi Umbi in May.

In the cookery section there were 75 entrants and 153 entries, more than at last year’s competition.

Cookery judge Helen Robinson of CWA’s Euberta branch said the standard of entries was very high.

“For me it’s outstanding to see the quality of the juniors’ entries,” she said.

She said there were five junior entries in each class, which was great to see.

Ms Robinson said when judging cooking, she predominately focuses on the taste as well as how the food is presented.

Ms Cullen of Narooma CWA was the overall winner in the handicraft section with a Ukrainian drawn thread called a myreschka, while the champion exhibit in the cookery section was won by Sally Halupka of Cobargo CWA with a sultana cake.

During the presentation of prizes, Far South Coast group president Mary Williams thanked all the entrants and CWA members.

“You’re just an amazing bunch of women who know how to get things done, as women do,” she said.
