Car and trailers were apparently directed all the way to the end of the headland as fair stallholders competed with anglers for parking spaces.
Scotty at Bermi Bait & Tackle reported boats were fishing east of the 12 Mile Reef, and the boys reported plenty of bait and water of 22 degrees.
Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler staffer Darren “Dash” Bowater reported due to the rough seas on Saturday, they decided to hit the estuary instead of heading wide in hope of a marlin.
“Plan B worked out to be a pretty good idea as we managed 29 bream on surface lures, along with a variety of by catch. Mate Anthony is relatively new to the estuary surface game, but didn't hold back once he found his groove managing half the haul and a new PB on surface lures.” Well done fellas.
Regular contributors Pam and Mark Feeley had another fantastic week on Tuross Lake with lots of nice flathead and heaps of bream after the rain. Mark caught two mulloway at 88cm and 77cm on fresh squid, plus an 84cm flathead. Pam caught a 70cm, 95cm and 96cm flathead all on poddy mullet and released an mulloway on fresh squid. “So exciting getting big flatties and then releasing them.” Agreed Pam!
Chris Cassar from Melbourne was up game fishing around Bermagui on February 22 when he hooked and fought a sizable striped marlin wearing an older tag so the details were recorded, it was re-tagged and sent on its merry way. Subsequent detailed inquiry with DPI/Fisheries tagging program staff revealed the marlin was tagged by Craig Rushby off Culburra back in April 2016. It had been at liberty for 308 days was still roughly the same 110 kilos. The hapless marlin took live and skipped baits on both occasions.
NSGFC report – Once again the Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club held a successful Australian National Sportsfishing Association (ANSA) convention over the weekend.
Unfortunately Neptune did not favour us this weekend with the bar being rough, with the result that only the bigger boats ventured out.
The rewards were there on Friday with 19-year-old Alana Hirs out fishing her father landing a 72kg striped marlin, winning her the game fishing section of the tournament, and then again on Saturday she tagged another striped marlin and several mahi mahi to complete the double and take out the tagging section.
The beaches yielded some cracker salmon but the inlet was a bit disappointing. Last year’s junior winner Stephie Ovington continued on her winning streak with bream and trevally securing another trophy for her in the Junior Catch and Release division, and another great young fisher Digger Cowie was runner-up. On Saturday some of the entrants decided to try Wallaga Lake, having a bit more luck.
It is great to see so many young people take up the sport, and I would like to welcome young Danielle Bunney and her sister to the club. Danielle landed herself a decent flounder. It is good to see more embracing the catch and release, it will keep our beautiful waterways well stocked.
Thanks to all our sponsors and a special thank-you to the staff at Island View Beach Resort for driving the boys into the club. Also a big thank you to all the volunteers, especially the new faces, and a special thanks to all the ladies for cooking and serving the meals. A big thanks to the Wollongong crew for always pitching in. Good job done by the committee. – Jan Hemmingsen
Bermi Social Anglers – Members showed a great response in attending the Bermagui Social Anglers’ Club fishing comp weekend barbecue on Sunday. The camaraderie makes for a relaxed get-together. This coupled with the offshore winner – Ian Reid and the onshore winner – Ron McGlashan – a birthday celebration and raffle winners Robert Brown, Don Rumball and Denise McGlashan, the club surely leaves its mark. President Fran thanked everyone for a great day, especially Ron our chef. Next month the comp. is over the weekend April 14-16 - See you ON THE DRIFT.
