For the weekend of May 27 and 28, doorknockers will collect funds to support Eurobodalla residents doing it tough.

Batemans Bay officers Rachel and Ben Knight said the appeal was already underway, with collection points in the Bay, Moruya and Narooma.

Rachel said the target for this year’s nationwide appeal was $8 million.

“When you think that Australia’s got a population of 23 million, if each person gave a dollar, we’d smash our goal,” Rachel said.

“People sometimes think when you donate a little bit, it’s not much, but if everybody in Australia gave a dollar, we’d have a huge amount of money.”

Ben said funds raised would assist the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, struggling families, natural disaster victims and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres.

“One hundred per cent of the money from the Red Shield Appeal goes directly into helping the communities of Australia,” Ben said.

“The money gets sent to headquarters and gets distributed Australia wide to where it’s needed.

“There’s different causes in the Bay that money will come from headquarters to help us out with.”

“From the stories we’ve heard from people, the shire is a really generous place – they really care about the community.”
