Narooma charter skipper Nick Cowley had a top day on the water Saturday with over a dozen legal kingfish all by 8am! The day before they also got snapper and gummy shark. “Not big fish only just legal to 74cm but mainly taken on poppers and stickbaits so good surface action, Sunday kingfish were harder work with mainly undersize kingfish with the odd legal, water temp is pushing 19 degrees and shaping up for a good season,” Nick reports. “Reef fishing and flatties etc remains good!”

Last week we reported on some rather big snapper caught off Tuross Head
On the lakes, the Bermagui tackle shop held its annual catch-and-release informal flathead competition on Wallaga Lake with 32 boats, one kayak, a handful of shore based anglers and approximately 70 people getting involved. Local Luke Cathor took out longest fish with a cracking 81cm dusky, while the junior prize went to Lachlan Moresi with his 49cm fish.
Graham Herbert up at Moruya reports sand flats at the Moruya River mouth has fished well for both flathead and whiting. Some good size bream have been caught on a run out tide at the hole in the wall using mullet fillet and prawns for bait. Estuary perch and bream are being caught further upstream targeting snaggy banks with small, hardbodied lures.
The mouth of the Tuross system has been holding schools of tailor and also a few trevally. A few nice flathead have been landed at weedy edges of the channels. Full pilchards on a gang hook with a small running sinker has worked well. Whiting are starting to move around with reports of fish being caught from the Fourways, all the way up to the highway bridge.
Moruya breakwall is fishing reasonably well for tailor at the moment. A full pillie under a float has been catching a few. A few reds are in close and can be caught off the rocks up and down the coast. South Durras has some accessible rock platforms that have produced quality fish in the past.
Offshore, snapper have been in quite close as of late with reports of some anglers bagging out on decent size fish in roughly 15 metres of water. A good berley trail and a lightly weighted bait has been the key to success. Others opting to use storm micro jigs are doing equally well on the reds.
The reefs just off Moruya are fishing well for mowie, nannygai, reds and all your other typical reefs species on squid and pillies. Plenty of flathead are being caught in 30 metres of water drifting Windsock beach also using California squid and pillies.
NSGFC report: It looks like the only overseas Narooma Sport and Gamefishing club member, currently visiting from England, John Swinhoe has been enjoying our fishing with some carp to 4kg at Wee Jasper, as well as salmon and bream off Cemetery Beach, Tilba and also some nice snapper from Tuross Reef.
Club member Bob Hirs is currently at Cabo San Lucas in Mexico attending the Bisbee Black and Blue Game Fishing Tournament and his comment was: “Wow you should see the boats in this place!” Bob went out on a charter and caught over 50 mahi mahi. They were also trolling for marlin and yellowfin anywhere from 200metres to 2km off the surf break. He has seen one yellowfin brought in at 201 pounds but they get them up to 350 lb.
