“It couldn’t have been done without the nearly 400 hours of volunteer labour. We had volunteers from 16-67 years of age raking rocks from the track, wetting and whacker-packing and even primary age children helping grass-seeding the outsides of the berms,” club member Tania Lingard said.
Equally significant to the completion of the track was the 1000 tonnes of fill from the Dignams Creek road works and the local men with their heavy machines who also volunteered their time.
In early 2018 the skate club, which had been responsible for the skate park opened six years ago, reignited their plans for this recreation area for youth.
The skate club’s vision had always included a BMX track, which cost about $10,000 to build with all funding coming from the club.
“We decided to include a basketball court as well, and are still fundraising for that,” Ms Lingard said.
On Saturday, November 24 from 11am there will be live music, barbecue and exotic food from the school of arts crew as well as short formalities to open the BMX track.
The new track is located at the town’s skate park, which is next to Narira Park Oval in Cobargo.
