The van caught fire because of an apparent electrical fault while parked at Narooma surf beach at 10.15pm on Friday.
The Narooma NSW Fire Brigade responded and extinguished the fire but the van sustained major damage.
A firefighter and surf club member suggested the couple move all their belongings into the club for safekeeping, which was just as well as later that night vandals smashed the van’s windows and mysteriously placed stolen items underneath the vehicle.
An electric barbecue piled with shoes, all stolen from the nearby caravan park, was found beneath the van the next morning.
A group of youths was seen in the park acting suspiciously in the early hours of Saturday and police are urging with any information to come forward.
The van was towed the next day and the couple were able to stay with family friends in the area.
They say the incident has not turned them off Narooma, which was still a beautiful place with caring, friendly people.
“We’re still looking at coming down again,” Mikayla said.
