Commander John Young said the pilings were in and work had begun on a new concrete pad. Once complete, the second-hand floating berth would be moved down from storage at headquarters to be anchored in on the pad and pilings.
The revamped berth will house the unit’s new rescue boat as well as its Jetskis, which should improve response times for bar rescues.
The new 10-metre rigid-hulled inflatable rescue boat was due to arrive on April 4 and the unit’s boat crew was due to head up to the factory at Yamba on March 26 to conduct several days of sea trials.
