There were 25 riders racing all up in the event and the Southern lugers did well in the competition.
Nic McKirdy finished first in the Classic Luge division and eighth in the Street Luge division, while Jo Jacobs of Bermagui got third fastest girl and a podium as well.
One of the girls Jo was racing got a bit wide and pushed her off the road, but she managed get the bronze after a few crashes over the weekend but no injuries.
McKirdy of Batemans Bay was Australian street and classic luge champion a couple of years ago and is still top ranked. He has travelled the world to compete, while the rest of the lugers are now also travelling extensively around Australia to compete.
Joining him at again at this year’s Launch event were Ken and Jo Jacobs from the Murrah, Bill Salmon and Chris “Critta” Markwort from Bermagui and Jason Beard and his sons Ammon and Ben from Narooma.
In Street Luge, Markwort finished ninth, Salmon 11th, Ken 14th, Jo 18th and Jason 21st.
In Classic, Ken finished fourth while in the juniors, Ammon finished first and Ben third while Jo finished third in the women’s.
Meanwhile, some of the Southern lugers also competed in the 2014 Cherry Bomb event held in Cooma recently.
McKirdy crashed in the final at Cherry after setting a new track record during his luge qualifying.
In the Street Division, McKirdy finished fourth, Salmon fifth, Markwort 10th and Ken 17th.
The Southern NSW Street Luge Racers group is a loose affiliation of street lugers from the Far South Coast including several from Bermagui and Narooma and are always looking for new members.
Follow their exploits and watch vids of the racing at the “Southern NSW Street Luge Racers” Facebook page.
They next hope to compete again at the BSL (Brisbane Street Luge) event and then later in the year at the Noosa Pro Am.
Nic McKirdy meanwhile posted the following on his Facebook about his racing:
After 6 years of streetluge, Im stoked to be able to celebrate my 25th race with a win at Launch 2014. I've been involved with this event since the beginning and this win means a lot to me. I'd like to give a huge shout out to Pat Brennan Phill Champion and David Anderson for getting me hooked and lending me gear at the very beginning and also my fellow GOFR's Grits, Sak and Ado for always reminding me how much fun this is. A huge thank you to ArcticBoyz Leathers for their ongoing support. I am so grateful to be involved with this company and finally a special thank you to Alexander TikiAlex Frischauf for the world class board! To everyone I've had the pleasure to meet and ride with over the years, you guys rock and I hope to do it all again soon
