THE Southern Eurobodalla Cricket Club took part in semi-final matches in all three senior grades last weekend. Unfortunately, there was only one successful team, the C grade, who will carry the Pirates' flag in this weekend's Plate final match.
A grade faced Eden, who won the toss and decided to bat first, compiling 215 runs on the first day. The Pirates' most successful bowlers were Nick Mason (3-25) and Russell Thompson (2-25). This score was about par on the large Dalmeny Oval and the Pirates' batsmen were quietly confident that they could chase this total on the next day.
Unfortunately, all plans of a measured and determined run chase were shattered by the pace and swing of Eden's left handed bowler, Matt Bell. In one of “those” days, which most cricketers have experienced, the Pirates were bundled out for the paltry score of 36, with Bell taking 6-8 in a match winning performance.
The B grade fared no better in their match against the strong Wolumla side, being comprehensively dismissed for 27, chasing 253.
Despite this disappointing finish, there were many positives in the season that the Pirates can look back on. The formation of a new club, which draws its players from all over the Eurobodalla Shire, had numerous logistical problems. Also, playing in the stronger Far South Coast Cricket Association was a learning curve for many players. The club will be stronger for these experiences next season.
C grade advanced to the Plate Final with a sound victory over Merimbula. Defending 5-165, the young Pirates dismissed their opponents for 124. They will now travel to Bemboka this Saturday in a bid to secure the first bit of silverware for the new club. Veteran, Boyd Brennan, is quietly confident that his team will acquit themselves well in their attempt to secure their sixth straight victory.
Once again, a huge thank you to our supportive sponsors, Club Narooma, Club Dalmeny, Narooma IGA, Shell Narooma, Richard Busuttil and Michaels at Dalmeny. These generous local sponsors have made it possible for the Southern Eurobodalla Cricket Club to be competitive in all grades this season and to hopefully continue improving next year.
