The flathead have been good off Bermagui and there were even some small squid taking micro-jigs in 35m of water off Camel Rock, which is quite unusual but not unexpected as the little lures catch all kinds. Only the odd snapper at 6-Mile Reef.
In the estuaries, both Coila Lake and Tuross Lake delivered for Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club with some nice big bream and a jewfish caught respectively.
Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler posted a great couple photos of Jodee Coyle who had an awesome day on the water with a PB flattie which was caught Sunday in Wagonga inlet and released healthy. Congratulations Jodee top effort.
Scotty at Bermi Bait & Tackle reported that lucky customer Mick Penyu got a big 1.4m 18kg kingfish while chasing gummy shark on Sunday south of Mystery Bay. Maybe the big king was going after those baby squid being caught on a jig!
Scotty also reports that 'Opportunatee' fished in 1000 fathoms off Batemans Bay and had albacore around in big numbers then young fisher Zoe pulled a cracker 25kg bluefin tuna from among them.
Meanwhile in another strange catch, another of his customers landed a nice 73cm kingfish in Wallaga Lake last week.
In good news for bass fishermen, a new weir at Brogo Dam will allow migrating Australian bass to get back into the dam, thereby greatly enhancing the native fishery and potentially the size of fish caught. The project started with Bega Valley Shire Council’s water services team working with NSW Fisheries and an environmental consultant to redesign an ineffective shingle weir downstream of the Brogo Dam.
Meanwhile, news broke today that the controversial factory Geelong Star has left Australian waters after catching and unloading all her quota and is off South Africa. There are fears she will return to Bermagui and Narooma waters next year when more small pelagic quota is allocated to her.
NSGFC Report – It seems that it was a good weekend all round for some of the Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club members. I received a photo from a very proud grandmother, Jenny Bettiens, of her granddaughter junior member Aliesha McPherson, who caught a 79cm jewfish at Tuross Head on Saturday morning. The club had a fishing expedition to Coila Lake on Saturday morning. Two boats fished and caught black beam, one pictured a 40cm (1kg). Members Mick Roberts and Scott Lowe fished wide of Montague Island on Sunday in Mick's boat 'Mickey Finn'. They found some healthy albacore trolling and ended up with a great catch of fish up to 10kgs. As usual the club rooms will be open for fish stories, drinks from 4pm Friday. Visitors are most welcome. – Jan Hemmingsen
