Senior Constable Scott Wharfe said the driver in his 70s from Mystery Bay and his 44-year-old son were travelling south when the trailer started to sway, causing the Hilux utility to roll over onto its roof.
Both occupants were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle and both have been transported by ambulance to Moruya Hospital. The driver was thought to be in a serious but stable condition, while the son suffered only superficial injuries.
Both the Narooma RFS and NSW Fire & Rescue brigades responded to the accident and together with local police were heard to comment that the occupants were very lucky to have survived given the roof of the utility had almost completely caved in.
Traffic on the highway was allowed through in alternating lanes and the accident was cleared up by around 11am.
Senior Constable Wharf reminded all drivers to slow down and take extra care this time of year with more holiday traffic on the roads.
