Just under 100 players competed in the three-day round-robin tournament for players aged over 35 years.
Narooma turned on glorious autumn weather for all three days with spectators enjoying an impressive display of tennis across all sessions.
In Men’s Singles, Sydney’s Phil Hazell won Group 1 edging out Neil Birks, also from Sydney. Group 2 saw Dapto’s Brian Clegg outlast Milton’s Herb Chee. Batemans Bay’s Donna Davis was the Women’s singles winner over Karen Tritton from Moruya Heads.
Men’s Doubles saw Herb Chee and Bomaderry’s Col Armstrong dominate their groups on both Saturday and Sunday. Dennis Love and Grant Smith, both from Merimbula, were too strong for their opposition. Smith later teamed with Marlene Veness, also from Merimbula, to convincingly win the top mixed doubles group.
In Women’s Doubles action, Mogo’s Anne Sawtell paired with Wendy Whittem-Trunz to win both of their events. Potato Point’s Paula Underwood paired with Dalmeny’s Jenny Mathie for a good win. Broulee’s Elaine Anderson and Bingi’s Michele Blackburn were also winners. Elaine later teamed with husband John to take out their mixed event.
Each night after tennis, players and their friends enjoyed entertainment arranged at Club Narooma, including a fun Trivia Night MC’d by Dalmeny’s Roger McEvoy which was one of the highlights of the weekend.
Organisers would like to thank our generous sponsors. During the tournament, Club Narooma’s Tony Casu presented Narooma Tennis Club President Kathie Thackray with a cheque for $2,500.
Major prize winners of the raffle were Anne Kane (Horizon Holiday Apartment prize), Col Armstrong (Narooma Golf Club prize) and Herb Chee (“Tennis Essentials” prize)
Organisers would also like to thank all the players for supporting the tournament, and, all the volunteers at Narooma and Dalmeny tennis clubs who worked so hard to make this annual event such a success.
